Many people prefer to use a standalone disk management utility instead of the Windows Disk Manager for resizing and moving partitions, formatting disks, and other critical tasks. Until recently, most such tools have been premium software, but Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition is a full-featured freeware disk management utility that can even be used commercially, which is great news for home and small businesses.

It can create, convert, hide, format, delete, wipe, resize, copy, split, merge, and move partitions, including altering existing partitions without data loss or corruption, on hard drives, flash drives, and similar storage devices. It works in Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

Partition Assistant's blue tones, linear disk capacity displays, and toolbar make it a good fit for Office and similar suites, and the left-hand navigation panel and full menus not only display the program's features but make it a cinch to access them. Partition Assistant displayed our system's three physical disks (SSD, HDD, and USB) as well as each disk's partitions. We selected a nearly empty 140GB partition on our 2.5-inch hard drive and started by changing the drive letter and label, moving on to various formatting, resizing, and splitting options.

Since this drive only held an out-of-date backup, we weren't worried about reformatting and resizing it, but Partition Assistant didn't lose any data that we didn't deliberately overwrite by reformatting the disk. One especially useful feature is the ability to hide partitions. Many users like to "overprovision" their SSDs by partitioning off a percentage of the capacity to prevent all the drive's memory cells from filling. Hiding the partition makes it easy to keep from using it accidentally. Partition Wizard also has three Wizards to handle important jobs: Extend Partition, Disk Copy, and Partition Copy. The Partition Copy Wizard let us specify Quick Copy, which only copies the used space, and Sector-by-Sector, which copies the entire partition structure to a new disk.

Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition would seem to be the most powerful and capable freeware disk partition utility we've tried. It's highly recommended for all users, and especially those with multidisk systems.

"Absolute piece of ****"

November 13, 2012  |  By ooooPhoeinxoooo

 |  Version: Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition 5.1

Pros

None. Wiped out my entire OS.

Cons

Great for destroying your operating system. Go elsewhere.

Summary

This piece of crap software managed to wipe out my operating system (Windows 7) removing critical files before it then resized it. Am now having to do a full re-install as even the automatic repair tools were unable to fix the damage done. Use at your own peril.

"Excellent - did just what I needed!"

October 29, 2012  |  By MiriamGreen

 |  Version: Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition 5.1

Pros

I had 2 partitions, and wanted to reduce the size of one so I could expand the other. The Windows tools (Windows XP) refused to work, one other partition program I tried could delete the smaller partition but couldn't resize the partitions. Aoemi Partition Assistant did everything with such ease that I couldn't quite believe that it was actually done! (Yes, it was.) Not only does this program work, but it does so with simple elegance. Best program ever. Seriously.

Cons

None that I could see.

Summary

I haven't tried lots of partition programs because I haven't had to - this one is just perfect.

Excellent product.

"Nice, but made Windows inoperable."

August 11, 2012  |  By MDHDMan

 |  Version: Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition 5.1

Pros

The interface is clean and fairly intuitive. The on-line help is good enough but could explain more. Partition Assistant performed almost all the functions I asked it to do

Cons

It made Windows unbootable.

A wizard-type assistant would enhance the usefulness of this product.

It did not handle the necessary Windows restarts well on my Windows 7.

Summary

Almost no software can do as much damage as a malfunctioning partitioning program, because the system image one has on hand to recover an unstartable Windows is useless once the partition in which Windows is to reside has changed size.

Partition Assistant made some sort of error that did not reveal itself until Windows hung on restart. I was very fortunate in that the repair-system function on the Windows installation DVD was able to find and correct the disk error that Partition Assistant produced. Otherwise, I would have had to install Windows from scratch, re-partition the hard drive back to its state before using Partition Assistant, and hope that my system-image backup would then work to restore the system that I had worked on so hard for several days.

Besides the fact that Windows' repair prowess saved me, the other good news is that Partition Assistant had indeed performed all but one of the actions that I had requested, and that my disk was partitioned (almost) the way I had specified. (Partition Assistant sets up a series of steps based upon the user's choices; and once the user has completed specifying his/her desired actions, he/she clicks on "Apply" to have Partition Assistant do the actual job. I initially specified a new partition size of 210 GB; but before clicking on "Apply" I changed my choice to 180 GB instead. The final result of Partition Assistant's work was that I got a 210 GB partition, suggesting the possibility that it got confused when it tried to resize the partition a second time in the same job.)

I am left wondering if it isn't better simply to use Windows' own Disk Management--it may be more restrictive than the more user-friendly and seemingly more flexible third-party alternatives, but maybe there's a reason for that!

Finally, back in the days when Windows Disk Management was barely helpful, I used (fee, not free) Partition Magic, which always worked perfectly. Maybe one really does get what one pays for.

"Worked flawlessly for me!"

July 20, 2012  |  By hartsister

 |  Version: Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition 5.1

Pros

Very easy interface, error messages were easy to understand to correct errors when process began, comprehensive disk management options

Cons

None as yet

Summary

Although working with disk partitioning is not for the novice user, this program is very easy to use for those who have a good basic understanding of how a hard disk is set up. I am very happy with the results (my C: drive, [primary]was expanded, requiring movement of my D: drive [logical drive for data]without loss of any data)

"small program with necessary features"

July 19, 2012  |  By WalianK00

 |  Version: Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition 5.1

Pros

the features I experience are good: extend system partition and make new partition.
other features list seems professional as well.

Cons

if suppors linux partition management, that will be perfect program.

Summary

I spent several seconds to think about download it or not. about 1min, I successfully downloaded this small program.
after launching the program i was guided to enlarge the system partition and make a new partition in easiest way. no sata loss and worked better than disk management. Worth downloading and recommending.
