Editors' Review

AoA DVD Ripper sports an interface simple enough to use without consulting the Help file and powerful enough to batch rip DVDs and convert them for portable devices all in one fell swoop. It can also rip specific and user-defined scenes from movies, making it eminently useful in grabbing a particular scene for further study or enjoyment.

The spreadsheet layout is complemented not by tabs, as is the current style, but by helpful numbered buttons and steps. Export formats include the basics like AVI, WMV, and MPEG, as well as FLV, MP4, VCD, and SVCD. You can also use it to extract audio tracks, great for grabbing those memorable quotes. The audio codec used is user-determined, as is the video codec, giving the solid program a bit of a boost in the customization department. You can also set the aspect ratio and tweak other settings if need be.

Users have noted that their customer service has been quick and responsive in the past, and that the registration code works for at least several upgrades--if not longer. All of this makes AoA a highly recommended DVD ripper. Hopefully future editions will support the nascent Blu-ray and AoA will make it to the next generation of movie lovers.

"Ease of use."

Never dreamed it could be so easy. Just outputted the file and dropped into Powerpoint 2010. Worked great the first time.

Some advanced features were a bit difficult to find.

It works great and is worth every penny. I highly recommend your product to other students in the MBA program that I'm working on.

"Requesting a Refund"

None - Buy something else

After paying $35 product doesn't include everything you need per THEIR instructions. Instructions (http://www.aoamedia.net/dvd-to-divx.htm) advise a DivX setting but that setting doesn't exist in the product. Other settings are terrible.

heir instructions (http://www.aoamedia.net/dvd-to-divx.htm) guide you to "Select the DivX codec" and "If you cannot find the DivX/Xvid codec from the list, obtain it by installing k-lite codec package". Just paid $35 for this product and now need to search for and install additional software. I did not expect to figure out how to install additional software to make this product I already paid for work. Found and downloaded the additional software, but can not get it to integrate with the product. Settings other than DivX are not very good.

Looks like I'm not able to change my star rating, but you should know that the company was completely fair with the refund.

"Fine if you go with the defaults, scary if not!!"

Once you have the correct settings it does what it says on the tin, but get them wrong and you will waste hours producing rips that have no lip synch or other weird issues.

When you get the settings right it does a good job. Not horrendously expensive.

I like the product now I have found the correct combination of settings that produce good rips at the same quality as the original DVD, but I don't like the fact that you have to find those settings yourself. All I wanted to do was make a WMV copy of a DVD for more convenient playback on my PC rather than having to mess about looking for the disks. With this product the default settings work but produce rips that are very low quality by default, by playing around with the settings you can get the quality you'd expect but it does not help you in any way, you just have to find those settings yourself. For me that is:

Type: WMV9
Res: 768 / 576
Frame Rate: 29.97 NTSC
WMV Video Quality: 2000 kbps
WMV Audio Quality: 128 kbps

Someone may be able to explain why here in the UK we are on PAL which is 25 FPS yet when playing back on a PC 29.97 NTSC works better?

This is the issue, without some form of help from the program I wasted a lot of time producing dud rips and after reading a lot of technobabble in forums and the like finally got to settings that seem to be OK on my system.

I would have preferred the software to ask me simple questions like do you want to make a like for like copy of the DVD or would you like to make it half size to make the rip quicker.

I would prefer the former and would rather wait longer but have a WMV that plays back as if I am watching the original DVD. If the software held your hand a bit and didn't assume you are a DVD technician working for the BBC I would have given it full marks.
