"Wintastic!"

April 02, 2010  |  By Reyendo

 |  Version: Alien Arena 7.33

Pros

Fast paced gameplay, good community, runs well on older hardware, available on both windows and linux, isfree.

Cons

Rather ugly on lowest video settings, irc client used for chatting difficult (for me) to configure.

Summary

I'm so glad to finally have a free fps that I can play on my laptop.

"This ain't your Grandma's shooter"

April 02, 2010  |  By Brent_Baumgartner

 |  Version: Alien Arena 7.33

Pros

100% Free to own, free to play
The graphics look real nice with newer hardware
Lightning fast gameplay
Easy to learn (I sort of fell right in and was comfortable after my first session playing)
Cross platform support (Win, Linux, Mac)

Cons

Time flies when you're having fun ;)

Summary

This game has a lot of nostalgic value to me. I haven't had this much fun playing a shooter since Unreal Tournament 10 years ago. I've been playing for 3 days now, and spent enough time with it to say that I haven't accomplished a damn thing since I installed it.

I'd recommend to new users to join the Alien Arena forums to get involved and aquainted with the regulars. The game seems to have a very dedicated group of active players with lots of tourney's and events going on.

The game has a lot of content (models, skins, maps, and mutators) both stock and third-party. I also really like that you can change the look of the HUD and the content displayed to whatever you like; most games don't allow that.

In closing, I'd like to say that I am equally impressed with the game as I am with the community. Everyone I've met has been really great and I forsee a lot of good times are to come. Peace.

"The best Free FPS ever! And... there's more"

April 02, 2010  |  By VP_Roosevelt

 |  Version: Alien Arena 7.33

Pros

Exciting, fast reflex game that anyone can play
The controls work so well, you really feel like its you playing
Rich graphics, awesome levels, fun player models
Hidden treasure: the community - truly great people.

Cons

I end up spending too much time playing. For free, I really can't see any cons. Its fair to say that you need some pretty good equipment to really get all the graphics the game has. I run in a reduced mode because my hardware isn't up to it.

Summary

The bottom line is that I feel lucky to have stumbled across this game which hasn't cost me a penny and made such good friends and had such fun playing. BTW: There is NO virus - period. In fact, there is nothing but good people working hard, investing themselves and their time for free. What you get with this game is just incredible. Really a stellar effort and well worth the download.

I really wanted to give this 5 stars, but I felt that it would be reasonable to include games you pay for. Some of those games are pretty cool, so I only gave 4. If we were limiting the rating to only free games, 5 stars wouldnt' be enough!

Don't just play this game. Jump in the IRC Channel and meet the community. EFnet: #alienarena. You will see what I mean. You have a lot of really good folks holding this together.

"Fast, Free, and downright FUN!"

April 02, 2010  |  By Sinnsane

 |  Version: Alien Arena 7.33

Pros

Open source and continually developed, I've been playing for a number of years and the game is constantly improving. Gameplay wise, it has a charm and addictiveness not matched by even many of the higly acclaimed commercial shooters.

Cons

How many hours of my life get eaten playing it :)

Summary

Gameplay. That single word could sum up Alien Arena for me. As a gaming experience it delivers gameplay to die for. Fast paced, addictive, easy to play but hard to master, it has everything needed on the playability front and much, much more. I've played a lot of PC games over the years and among FPS this is the only game that has kept me coming back again and again, and playing long term.

The fact that it's free is of course a welcome bonus, there's nothing to lose by trying it - and no virus that one poster here alludes to. I'm not sure what he bases the idea of a virus on, perhaps he'd been visiting too many torrent sites and grabbing greatgame.crackfix.workingonline.exe files. There's *definitely* no virus in Alien Arena - running eset on one pc here, kaspersky on the other, and malwarebytes on both, nothing, and absoulutely nothing in processes/hijack this logs etc that shouldn't be there.

As a long term player my honest advice to everyone would be to try the game for themselves - forget about junk like viruses, there aren't any, just download it, jump in and give it a shot. It might not be to everyones taste, but then again you might find yourself addicted to a great old school shooter with many great modern touches. I did, and have loved every minute of it :)

"Fast paced fragging madness!"

April 02, 2010  |  By VPCheney

 |  Version: Alien Arena 7.33

Pros

Awesomely addictive! Cool graphics and maps. Great community. Always being developed.. and oh yeah. It's FREE!

Cons

To get used to the game, and understand what you're doing takes a little bit of time. But come on, what game doesnt?

Summary

After being introduced to this game by my father, who was looking for free fps games for linux at the time, it quickly became a very regular occurance to play this! The gameplay is awesome. In no other FPS game I have played, do I feel like i'm moving through maps so fluidly. The gameplay is extremely fast, so you better "Get your twitch on" with a few cups of coffee first :)

Also, just noticed the comment from harold. Dude, I don't know what virus scanner you're using, but this certianly does not have any viruses whatsoever! This game has been downloaded and installed on a few computers here, using combinations of AVG and Nod32. No viruses ever. Please tell me you don't have "My first virus scanner" by "Fisher Price"

Anyways, to the rest of you, looking for a great game which is VIRUS FREE, download this! :)

"Getting more and more cramped in room for improvement!"

April 01, 2010  |  By MaxToTheMax

 |  Version: Alien Arena 7.33

Pros

-Very good graphics (Quake 4 levels, closing in on ETQW if you have the hardware)
-Crazy fun game, tons of alternate gameplay modes and mutators
-Lots of stock content
-HUGE amounts of 3rd party content
-Amazing community, friendly developers

Cons

-If you don't have the hardware, it won't run well. Intel i915 graphics are barely playable on some (not all) maps.
-Some of the level design can be baroque at times.
-On the Windows version, there is a browser toolbar in the installer.

Summary

This is absolutely my favorite game in every respect, and has been for a long time.

To the guy who claims the game has a virus: The game engine is called CRX. And a long time ago, there used to be a virus called CRX. Google's safesearch was actually making the same mistake as you for a while but it got corrected. Be assured that this game is totally safe (And I should know, I've been using this game since 2006!)

The browser toolbar helps support the game by a few cents if you choose to install it, but you can opt-out when installing, and you are free not to install it, so I don't think it's too big a deal.

"My Review Of Alien Arena 7_33"

March 14, 2010  |  By harold5187

 |  Version: Alien Arena 7.33

Pros

The graphics, and false sense of security you get while playing it, as its hidden virus attacks you from behind, hoping you don't notice!

Cons

The hidden virus!

Summary

For those of you looking for a free game with great graphics, and willing to take the risk of downloading it, then this is a great game, but for those of you a little more cautious, I suggest you install anti-virus software so that you catch the virus that comes with this game.

Here are the details, it first surfaces in 2007, also when I first caught sight of this game title.

This great game provided without cost, comes with its own COST in the form of a hidden virus: Here are the details...

W32/IRCBot-based!Maximus,C:\ALIEN ARENA 7_33\CRX.EXE,Real-Time Protection,Disinfected,3/11/2010,3/12/2010,3/11/2010,4.325

You may say this is harmless, but it runs in the background, and allows remote activities... Do a google for CRX.EXE...

I personally take such attacks as not only an attack on my computer, but an attack on this country... It angers me that sites can offer free games, without having tried them out themselves, and I must also wonder if they are not part of some global cyber attack on America, which I would call a terrorist attack. This is not just a free game, it was created to attract gamers, to obtain possibly private data off their computers while running secretly in the background.

My friends, if you want a real game, that is fun, and without dangerous threats such as this... Just do what you can to save about 49.99 and buy it from off the shelves, because I myself, can't afford a new computer every time some jerks release a free virus infected game!
