The universal binary still hasn't been released and probably never will because the great people at Autodesk purchased Alias and they've killed development. Any email to them lately gets me forwarded to their knowledge base which is pretty much ignored by them. I guess they wanted to own Maya but could care less about Sketchbook yet they're still trying to capitalize on it by selling it as one of their flagship designer tools.

This is much worse than what Adobe did to the Macromedia products because they've actually improved them a little bit.

I think the only thing that Autodesk did for Sketchbook is replace the Alias logo with their own. A good way to tick someone off is sell them a $200 program and then kill support. Autodesk needs to fix the software or stop selling it altogether.

"Really nice app, way too expensive"

Summary

This is a really nice, basic sketching program. The UI is nice and clean and generally stays out of the way, and the basic drawing tools work well. IMO this isn't the app to use for anything other than pencil & pen sketching; the other tools don't look anything like their natural-world equivalents. You'll be much better off with Painter (or even Photoshop) for natural media stuff like paint, charcoal, markers, etc.

The price, however, is a deal-breaker for me (frankly it's a rip off). There is no way in hell I'm going to drop almost $200 for something this basic. It should be $50 at most. For that reason, I cannot recommend it. If Alias ever gets a clue and prices this more reasonably, I will consider buying it.

"Great concept marred by absurd price point"

Summary

Alias has created an app that I've wanted for some time, I could see myself doing a lot less scanning of paper sketches with it. The speed is terrific, the UI is clean and easy to learn; a five year old could be happy with something like this. The gestural navigation of the tool set is brilliant, you can keep your rhythm when changing brushes. If they added the ability to rotate the canvas like Painter does I might almost consider buying it. My real gripe is the price: SketchBook is FAR too expensive for what it offers. I'd happily pony up $50-$70 for this; or get it bundled with the new Wacom tablet I'm in the market for, instead of old versions of Painter. Too bad, this could be a great halo product for Alias if it were priced more like its namesake.

"Great Application"

Why are people bashing this great app!!
Sure Corel painter and photoshop have more options but Sketchbook Pro is way more responsive and intuitive. I guess the people rating it are more artists than designers.
I think this is an amazing tool for what i do [industrial design]. it takes me minutes to get some concepts and distribute them intrenally.

Alias keep up the great work.

"Great App!!"

Summary

Nice app with some very nice tools, the pencils and markers are the real stars here. The pencil tool with a wacom tablet will make pictures you would swear were drawn with a real pencil.

The Airbrush is also top notch. The ballpoint pen is passable but the paintbrush and other tools really need a lot of work. This program is no Corel Painter but in some ways that is good. It's layout is super easy and very intuitive and the tools are all lightning fast....something painter can only dream about.

The bad parts of this program is the lack of depth. They are layers but not many tools to use them effectively. There are no filters, no surface textures and many other features that make painter number one in natural media graphics programs. None of these omissions are real deal killers as sometimes simple is better for a quick and easy sketching and for previsualization.

The real deal killer is the price. At 179.00 list the program is only a little over a hundred less than the much more useful Corel Painter. These are list prices, if you can get painter for less than 299.00 then there is even less of a reason to buy Sketchbook. This program should not be priced more than 59.95, 49.95 would be a better price as far as the feature set is concerned.

Still this program has plenty of potential. With a better toolset and a much lower price Alias could produce a must have program for a graphic designers toolbox!

"good promise..."

A really nice start to an application that has some significant promise for professional digital artists. The interface is fun and quick, but there are some obvious omissions in the feature set. If Alias could maintain the funtionality of the interface and add some necessary elements (selections, layer masks, photoshop compatibility, fill/gradient tools, paper textures, etc.) then they might really have something. Honestly guys, I know you don't want to "scare" artists away with too much technical mumbo-jumbo, but give us some credit! I'll keep on eye on the app (while you're at it, add in resolution-independent brushes... I miss LivePicture!).

Have played with this since tablet windows only version. Still a great program , but sooooooooo not worth 179$ at all, It just draws stuff as bitmaps, if it was vectors it would be king of the skecthing apps.
It is really nice with the very fast interface and corner toolbar, and yes this demo works for me. But all it does is sketch, .. No review really, a very cool app, overpriced.

...stable for me

This is an awesome, powerful app that was only Wintel, and Alias listened to the requests of OS X users to make it a version for them- and they did. I downloaded the demo and it works very well with an easy to use interface!
Thanks Alias
