"Excellent support, solid device"

June 08, 2005  |  By Ilgaz

 |  Version: AlchemyTV DVR 2.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I use it for months now primarily for recording (DVR part) and I had some strange problems with my TV reception which has nothing to do with Alchemy.

Other than saying "but we said that in 20th sentence of readme" etc, they even worked with electronics guys to give me a suggestion how to make reception good.

It turned out to be the TV technician split he cable tv/ cable internet wrong place.

I am a TV pro and we use AVID kind of stuff at workplace, this home product made me sure about what brand I should look for when I need pro devices whatever platform we use.

Keep up the good work.

"great app with some faults"

this software works ok but a few improvements would be appreciated:
- 16:9 format support for better tv view on large cinema displays
- monitor sleep support (screen saver too) when a scheduled recording starts (my cinema display wakes up every time and goes to sleep once the recording ends - not so good for extended recs!)
- enhanced localization (e.g. italian...)

"QuickTime 7 solves problems"

Summary

Hi!

I have used this product for more than a year now, and it worked great right from the beginning with video and audio in perfect sync. Then suddenly something happened - probably an OS or AlchemyTV DVR update - and then I had big problems with syncing.
Thankfully all problems have vanished after I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4. There's no syncing problems and I can even record in MPEG4 full size, something which was impossible before 10.4 on my MDD Dual 867 Mhz. This product is great value for the money; it lacks some of the advanced features of ElGato's EyeTV (ie. time-shifting), but as a viewer and recorder it works just perfect and Miglia just keeps on updating the application.

"Great for the price!"

I'm very satisfied with this product. I like the fact that it is a PCI card and not a USB box requiring desk space. The remote control works great. The latest version of the software is very OS X centric in my opinion. No, it's not digital and it's not HDTV ready but it performs as advertised and is fine for watching TV and recording programs.

If Miglia ever updates the card to include digital and HDTV I would not hesitate to upgrade. They produce a good, solid product.

"Has always worked great for me!!!"

I have a upgraded Digital Audio G4(1.33) and all versions of the software have worked great and this new release is no different. I installed the new version right over my old version and restarted with no problems. The video capture is excellent and far easier than other video caputer solutions I have used. Nice software/Hardware...

"No more updates ???"

 |  Version: AlchemyTV DVR 2.2.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
There used to be very frequent updates to this software, but it seems to have stopped completely now.

One major thing missing is the support for iMovie5 compatible MPEG4 recording. This is available in their new USB2 based product, but would be a welcomed update for us Alchemy TV DVR users.

A nice product with a great price, but it seems that development have more or less stopped.

"No support anymore?"

March 03, 2005  |  By Joachim

 |  Version: AlchemyTV DVR 2.2.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
My problem is that any recording stops after a random amount of time.

In the beginning support was great, but it seems they have no solution for my problem so they simply stopped responding.

I think the product is end-of-life. I bought an HD/DVD recorder anyway.

Summary

Big but here...it only records if the program is running...and they don't make this VERY clear....it should be a big pop up warning when quitting the prog...except, it should be smart enough to be able to record even if the program isn't running...like the RadioShark does...but overall a great prog.

"Finally Installed"

 |  Version: AlchemyTV DVR 2.2.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It finally installed for me. In general though, I'm becoming a little dismayed with the software. Could Miglia stop adding features to the software and just work on optimizing it? It has become more bloated with each release. Save us the monthly updates and just make the software less CPU intensive, and more reliable in general, even if it takes months to release another update.

"Impressive Quality and solv ed problem"

October 27, 2004  |  By midi3e

 |  Version: AlchemyTV DVR 2.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Greetings,

i am a cameraman and Videoeditor for a german TV station and know from my daily work what good quality is and i am realy impressed by the picture quality of this little grabber card.

For a "consumer" product, i think it is as good as you can get.
Next step would be a expensive component card which costs
20 -50 x the price of this pci card.

For my privat video recorder i used the Formac Studio
which uses the dv format nativly and delivers nice quality as
well (not as good as the Alchemy but ok) till the support
got worse and worse.

Alchemy demands high CPU power but is able to encode
in alot more formats and with prestine picture.

Best choice for Apple Computer!

about my problem stated in the last posting.
Switching to german system and back to english solved
the problem of not able to change schedule times.
It works now perfectly.

What i would like to see in the software is an easy way to quite the programm and still record for a predefined time and a way to record
"silent" where the programm is still running but no sound is sent to audio-out.
