Version: Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0.1025.7828

"Tired of bloatd AV suites that slow your computer down and just don't work?"

by JCitizen on October 19, 2007

Pros: Any fat bloated software suite that is slowing your computer down can't be doing a very good job protecting your computer I don't care how many features it has. Electronic data protection was the only feature that kept me from dumping these overrated AV solutions. NOW Agnitum has private data protection - AND this firewall is so advanced that professionals can use this firewall on 64 bit systems and I am sure the Vista version will be out soon if not already.

If you are a newbie - try the trial Pro version and look at the user guides for the free version that are written for newbies. This will give you the insight you need to simplify the installation and configuration of the firewall. You would have to buy a hardware firewall gateway device to get a better firewall with similar features - but if you don't know Linux you would have to pay for expensive services to come close to matching Agnitum's capabilities.

Don't let the pop ups confuse you when you install; just click "block once" untill you notice you can't do anything and then try again and click "allow once" - If this gives the process functionality then you know you did right and next time you can permenantly allow that process within parameters that are explained clearly in the beginner's guide.

If you don't know the name of the process you are being quizzed about just Google it or click allow once and chances are you'll be fine. If you are doing nothing and you get a popup; chances are this is a suspicious process that could be trying to take over your computer! I feel anyone can get the hang of it.

If you like to use your computer for buying things online and giving out personal information(usually on SSL connection), you have no choice but to get serious about personal computing security. Just read the papers if you don't believe me.

Cons: No cons yet. For those that have used ZoneAlarm, the pop up learning phase is similiar. If that was too irritating for you; just remember - even Zonealarm can be defeated by the new cracker tech that is lurking out on the web and maybe in your computer right now. Perhaps you should wipe your hard drive and reinstall the operating system and just forget about full network functionality and keep on using insecure software. Get a geek buddy to help you install the firewall if it is daunting for you. Kaspersky may be your least alternative but you will pay more for it also.

I am using this on my laptop with Windows XP Pro 64bit Edition and it is working swimmingly. If I run into any problems I will ad a comment to this review or do another review. Happy secure computing!

Had to drop this firewall for Comodo, it turns out it isn't rated as well as Comodo and Agnitum was having problems fixing the personal data protection feature for 64 bit; the 32 bit version may be fine, I don't know.

With the security landscape changing so rapidly now I may do something different next week, but for now I'm trying to learn how to use Comodo's iVault so I won't need Outpost's personal data protection feature.

And all of them left viruses on my computer, were so bloated they didn't have time to protect my processes, slowed it down so bad I couldn't even use my computer, or had too many weaknesses as was the case with Trend Micro. I am not a spammer. I do not work for any company; I just hate crackers and hackers and will do anything I can to help the public with computer security!
