Version: Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 3.51.759.462

    "A bit heavy on system-resources.."

    by 19monty64 on July 1, 2006

Pros: but an excellent product....too heavy for my 256M, so I downgraded to the free-version which is actually the easiest on ram that I've found. (other than windows f/w) I found the ability to define the ruleset much "tighter" than ZA!

Cons: already have enough s/w-scanners, so this just weighed my system down....if it out-performed A2 & SuperAntiSpyware, I'd consider the switch!

and good stuff like that. Becarefull with the "Tea Timer' and Ad Watch though; could conflict with Outpost if it is not configured properly.

setting up firewalls, I got all the advice I needed at wilderssecurity(.)com. They are a host forum for eset, ewido, javacool, and others with 30,000+ members that can answer all tech-related issues. There is even a new members section that explains how to use the forum and to sign up. No need to sign in to read all the posts for researching, but signing in is needed to post. A temporary eMail is OK as I've been a member since April and only received 1 eMail (to activate the account) and when signing out the cookie is automatically removed (not a tracer) ALL SECURITY TOPICS COVERED. NOT A CHAT-ROOM, JUST A GREAT SOURCE OF INFO FOR NEWBS AND EXPERTS ALIKE! (good luck with the firewall)

i will give it a go, i just want apps that don't want to take over the security center of windows, even with a gig of ram the resource pigs add up in a hurry.

it makes InternetExplorer6 a safer browser, which I'm also using along with Opera9. My pc is only has 256Mb/ram so low ram usage is important. I am using AVG-Free, with shield on, pop-peeper and alpha-clock active, and there is NO slowdown at all with lots of available ram. Also there is no conflict with any of my apps. checking for updates, like SuperAntiSpyware, HijackThis, A-squared or the others already mentioned. ONE PROBLEM THAT I DID HAVE WAS A CONFLICT WITH SECURITY-CENTER, WHICH I DISABLED WHEN RE-INSTALLING OUTPOST AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS SINCE. THE BIG BENEFIT I FOUND WITH THIS FIREWALL IS THAT IT WILL NOT INSTALL IF IT DETECTS REMNANTS FROM AN UN-INSTALLED FIREWALL, EVEN IF IT IS JUST THE F/W-INSTALLER. NO B.S.O.D. WITH THIS F/W. When I get a new pc with at least 1Gb/ram I will surely get OutpostPro as it adds an extra layer of defense against spyware. Try this free firewall out...it un-installs very cleanly as agnitum is expecting you install Pro version eventually. I was very impressed with the results from lesk-test, for BOTH versions!!!

but don't upgrade to pro, unless you decide to upgrade. The free version has a fair amount of spyware-blockers such as pop-up-blocker,web-site-blocking, content blocking & listing of connection attempts. All these functions can be turned off or modified. The real-time protection is only installed by way of a toolbar plug-in, available only in pro. Settings for rule-sets is very intuitive as it recognizes browsers and download managers, and recommends rulesets for you. The only firewall that is as easy to config. would be Comodo, which uses a wizard. Comodo uses 40M when running and they are working towards lower mem-usage. OutpostFree uses maybe 16M while running but is discontinued and there is only one update avail & then it's done. I would say this is comparable to Kerio3.15 which is also discontinued and still very popular. Kerio uses 6M-ram but Outpost is easier to use "out-of-the-box" as Kerio needs more tech-savvy According to LeakTests the only f/w better would be OutpostPro and Look&Stop, but for freeware, this is the best as it beats ZoneAlarm because of a more defined ruleset (and lower ram-usage) So, unless Comodo can lower their mem-usage I'm sticking to OutpostFree.............. This f/w worked well with 98SE, and now with XP!

are you using the outpost firewall free 1.0 ? if so..how do you like it overall. i find the vast majority of firewalls are so darn overbearing.
