From Mythicsoft :Agent Ransack is a freeware professional file-search utility for finding information on your hard drive quickly and efficiently. Agent Ransack provides many features, such as regular expressions that allow complex, rule-based searches; immediate contents results view; and various wizards to walk the user through the search process. Users familiar with the Unix grep command will appreciate the ability to search the contents of files using regular expressions, as well as the ability to view found contents without having to open the files.
Version 1.7 features several bug fixes.

"For free, it's more than worth it!"
Pros: It's the hare compared to Microsoft Search's tortoise, very fast in comparison, have had it a few weeks and it's found things that Search missed, on one of my drives there are so many files that a Search search could take more than 10-15 mins, with this it's seconds. Maybe it's my stup or luck, but this works great for me.
Cons: No major ones yet that I've come across

"I use Agent Ransack all the time. Highly recommend."
Pros: You can search for files that "look like" a pattern. Better: It finds files that contain "search-for" text that even the built-in WinXP search doesn't find. If you know you wrote (something) a few months ago but can't remember what file its in, this tool will find it - .DOC files, CS.,VB files, etc for example. It handles Unicode and ANSI files, no problem.
Cons: 1. Wish it had a way to create a new instance of itself with the current search params.
2. Minor complaint - Regular Expressions are a great way to find (for example) text that looks like "something" or "some thing" - Agent Ransack supports Reg. Exps but entering what you want it to look for requires an advanced user knowledge... the feature could be made a lot easier for those of us who aren't experts at Reg Ex usage.

"Ok - better free tools out there"
Pros: Free, small download size, fast searching by filenames, lightweight, no configuration required.
Cons: Very very slow when searching for Containing Text - now any faster than the Windows built-in search - this really make it a no-go for me.

"Best searcher I have used years. MS Search is so lame compared to this."
Pros: I like everything about this program, especially the 'search for text in file' option, where Microsoft search fails miserably. Actually shows, highlighted, where in the file the search string occurs. And it fast. Seems faster than the MS search. MS search may be great to search for Office file, but fails beyond that. Agent Ransack, is a right click away.
