"Possibly worthwhile to some, but frustrating for me"

    October 1, 2008  |   By karlraade

    Version: Advanced URL Catalog 2.1

    Pros

It had a decent overall look, looks like it has some good functionality (searching for broken links, etc)

    Cons

Crashed during initial execution, installer does not create launch shortcuts and fails to re-install/un-install, user interface so polished that new users have to hunt for basic functions, cannot import from HTML

    Summary

I can't say it's bad by any stretch. I can say that it did not install properly, and left me unable to either re-install or un-install it. This does not mean it will happen to everyone or even most users, because these things can happen even under the best conditions. I mention this mainly so you know why i can't provide much detail on the product.
The first thing that struck me was the UI. It looks nice, but focuses on icons rather than providing the well-known "File Edit ..." menu structure that make virtually all other software easy to use on first try. This approach can make it easy after you learn how each function is represented in icon and some text, but until then productivity takes a back seat to learning a puzzle. Personally, i'd rather be productive.
I created a new database and tried loading in an HTML of my current bookmarks, but that's not an option. Instead i began exploring the UI and somewhere along the line it crashed. I can only re-launch it by digging into the install directory, but frankly why bother? I see tons of fluff but the core functionality leaves a lot to be desired, especially if i cannot import a simple HTML of my bookmark list, the most common universal means of migrating bookmarks between applications.
It might be useful to many users, but outside of the attention to UI i don't see anything that doesn't exist elsewhere. At worst, i don't see where this would be a problem for anyone who wants to take a moment to give it a test drive. Just please leave some feedback on your experience: if you find it more useful than i do, i'm sure others would like to know.
