"AUC gets bookmark management done"

November 11, 2009  |  By prazim

 |  Version: Advanced URL Catalog 2.14

Pros

After considering a number of bookmark management tools,I chose AUC. It offers a functionality and interface which makes it easier & more efficient to create exports of special bookmark collections to share with others & social bookmarking platforms.

Cons

Interface does not comply with user-defined Windows theme font.

"Possibly worthwhile to some, but frustrating for me"

October 01, 2008  |  By karlraade

 |  Version: Advanced URL Catalog 2.1

Pros

It had a decent overall look, looks like it has some good functionality (searching for broken links, etc)

Cons

Crashed during initial execution, installer does not create launch shortcuts and fails to re-install/un-install, user interface so polished that new users have to hunt for basic functions, cannot import from HTML

Summary

I can't say it's bad by any stretch. I can say that it did not install properly, and left me unable to either re-install or un-install it. This does not mean it will happen to everyone or even most users, because these things can happen even under the best conditions. I mention this mainly so you know why i can't provide much detail on the product.
The first thing that struck me was the UI. It looks nice, but focuses on icons rather than providing the well-known "File Edit ..." menu structure that make virtually all other software easy to use on first try. This approach can make it easy after you learn how each function is represented in icon and some text, but until then productivity takes a back seat to learning a puzzle. Personally, i'd rather be productive.
I created a new database and tried loading in an HTML of my current bookmarks, but that's not an option. Instead i began exploring the UI and somewhere along the line it crashed. I can only re-launch it by digging into the install directory, but frankly why bother? I see tons of fluff but the core functionality leaves a lot to be desired, especially if i cannot import a simple HTML of my bookmark list, the most common universal means of migrating bookmarks between applications.
It might be useful to many users, but outside of the attention to UI i don't see anything that doesn't exist elsewhere. At worst, i don't see where this would be a problem for anyone who wants to take a moment to give it a test drive. Just please leave some feedback on your experience: if you find it more useful than i do, i'm sure others would like to know.

"Indispensable if you participate to any degree in social bookmarking"

July 28, 2008  |  By prazim

 |  Version: Advanced URL Catalog 2

Pros

JordySoft has designed a tool that quickly becomes indispensable. It not only converts bookmarks from one format to another, but enables you to verify URLs extracted from any other source, supplying information missing from your input file and alerting you to broken links. It also effortlessly identifies and removes duplicates.

JordySoft is also very responsive to enhancement requests which makes me even more delighted in this tool and its developer. Advanced URL Catalog is far superior to every other bookmark "manager" tool I have tried, and I have tried quite a few! The more you use it, the more uses you will discover for it. It also has an excellent looking GUI, and gorgeous system tray icon. JordySoft's attention to detail is self-evident in this tool's performance, functionality, and design. This completely revamped version includes the ribbon toolbar.

"Another One Bites The Dust!"

July 28, 2007  |  By meeshu

 |  Version: Advanced URL Catalog 1.24

Pros

Fairly clear layout. Easy(ish) to use.

Cons

Doesn't seem to work with Netscape (V9.0b2)!??

Help file is grossly inadequate. Website doesn't provide much help either.

I uninstalled Bookmark Buddy because it didn't work properly with Opera. Now I've uninstalled Advanced URL Catalog because it doesn't work with Netscape.

Next bookmark manager please!?

Pros

Jordy has designed a tool that quickly becomes indispensable. It not only converts bookmarks from one format to another, but enables you to verify URLs extracted from any other source, supplying information missing from your input file and alerting you to broken links. It also effortlessly identifies and removes duplicates.

Jordy is also very responsive to enhancement requests which makes me even more delighted in this tool and its developer. Advanced URL Catalog is far superior to every other bookmark "manager" tool I have tried, and I have tried quite a few! If you are a (former) Jetlinks user, this is the replacement tool you absolutely must have. The more you use it, the more uses you will discover for it. It also has an excellent looking GUI, and system tray icon. Jordy's attention to detail is self-evident in this tool's performance, functionality, and design.

"A very good "huge collection of Favorites" organizer, great search"

May 09, 2006  |  By Frank515

 |  Version: Advanced URL Catalog 1.21

Pros

If you've got a very large collection of favorites, you probably truly need this program. I'm testing out the 1.22.2 version right now, and I'm very impressed with it. I've got over 13,000 bookmarks in my "struggling" Internet Explorer favorites, and it is SO nice to be able to search and see the search result to choose from etc with Advanced URL Catalog. That is one of the main positives, you end up with zillions of folders and subfolders, it's hard to find things, this program gives you a great search.

I've had my favorites folder become corrupted as well in the past, this program gives you control with your own database, you can export and re-populate Explorer etc. There are many great features, it imports your favorites file with no problems, easy to drop new urls into it, easy to edit title etc, very nice program and the developer listens well to suggestions and is very responsive.

Cons

I had some minor criticisms, sent an e-mail to the developer, and he fixed them! So, not much to criticise on the program. I compared it with around 8 other URL organizing programs, this one is my favorite. Several others were severely lacking, and it is a pain installing and comparing a lot of programs. To me this is the keeper after doing a lot of looking, a very solid database environment for your out of control library of web addresses! I don't think the 'favorites' component of Internet Explorer was ever designed to deal with the quantity of bookmarks we accumulate over years of use, nor is it able to organize well or be as visibly "accessible" to get under the hood in the way Advanced URL Catalog is. Again, the search facility alone, it's great, check it out! No more wondering what folder / subfolder I placed an address at, search finds it fast and shows the path as well in your folders.
