Advanced File Vault locks and password-protects files and folders, but the program itself isn't password-protected.

When you first install Advanced File Vault, you are asked to set a master password that is used to encrypt and decrypt all of your files and folders. It offers a pleasant-looking user interface with straightforward icons. The online Help feature describes each of the icons in case you're unsure of their purpose. The program operates through your context menu. Just right-click on the file or folder that you want to encrypt, select the Advance File Vault option and the file is added to a list where you can choose to lock or unlock the file, and hide or show the file. During our tests, Advanced File Vault effectively blocked access to selected items. We were also able to hide files from view. Surprisingly, the program itself isn't password-protected, so anyone can go in and change your file settings.

This program is easy enough to use, but we prefer security programs that are secure as well. We recommend you keep looking for a more secure encryption tool, one that protects your items and itself from unwanted access.

Once a file is locked or hidden, it is completely encrypted and none of its contents can be viewed. To lock a file or folder, simply right-click on it and select the lock option.
