Editors' Review

+
The new version of this indispensable product doesn't introduce revolutionary changes, but it doesn't have to. As the low-end PDF reader, it simply keeps up with Acrobat Professional and Standard. This release adds the ability to play back embedded multimedia files in MP3, QuickTime, Macromedia Flash, Real, and Windows Media formats, as well as to submit Adobe PDF forms. It also replaces some of the icons in the default interface with optional, dockable toolbars. You might as well install this now before a Web site you visit prompts you to download it, because you'll need it.

"It is an adequate PDF reader. But nothing special."

November 07, 2010  |  By 12358error

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 9.4

Pros

This software is great in that most people do not more capabilities of a PDF reader than this one.

Cons

That being said, it does not have much advanced functionality.
It can be memory intensive, especially for older computers.
It is more susceptible to security issues.

Summary

If you casually browse PDF files, this is the program for you. However, for larger and more frequent users of PDF files, you may want to consider alternatives. Most people do not need more than Adobe Reader to view and fill out PDF documents and forms. However, when using Adobe Reader, it may become CPU and memory intensive and, if you have an older computer, you might hear the fans speeding up noticeably. Including CPU problems, Adobe Reader is commonly targeted my hackers. If you plan to use it as a PDF reader, make sure you read, with discretion and never, ever open a PDF file from an unknown source. And even if it is a known source, always double check first.
