Reliable and useful, Adobe Reader for Mac proves to be an essential application for reading, printing, and commenting on PDF files.

Pros

Good functionality: With Adobe Reader for Mac, you can do more than just view PDF files -- you can edit them as well, adding text and placing check marks and initials. It also lets you submit forms created with fillable form fields. This is especially helpful since nowadays many forms that you download from the Internet require you to use it to fill in the blanks.

Supports signatures: With this app you can add your signature onto files. This is an especially useful feature when you need to fill in and return a form or sign a document, but you don't have a working printer close by. You can choose to either type your signature, import a picture of your signature, or draw it using a mouse or trackpad.

Streamlined interface: Although the amount of features is impressive for a free application, the interface is clearly laid out and easy to navigate.

Reliable: It opens and displays files of all sizes, even large ones with many detailed images, quickly and smoothly. We have not experienced any technical glitches. Also, updates are released regularly.

Cons

Some advanced features require subscription: Adobe Reader doesn't have a paid version. Instead, if you want to take advantage of some of the more advanced features, you must sign up for a monthly subscription that starts at $1.99 a month. Two of these advanced features are emailing files directly from the application, and converting PDF files to other formats, including to Word.

Bottom Line

Adobe Reader proves to be the most functional, free PDF reader and editor available. Admittedly, Preview for Mac does share some of the features available on Adobe Reader, but not all of them. Besides, most fillable forms that you download from the Internet were originally created using other Adobe products and therefore must be filled out using Adobe Reader. This is a must-have application for all Mac users.

"Must have app on the Mac... Really?"

May 17, 2014  |  By McLederer

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 11.0.07

Pros

It can read PDFs. This is a Big deal on Windows, but on a Mac it's just redundant software.

Cons

Doesn't add any capability beyond the free and apple support Preview app.

Summary

CNET review sounds like an advert from Adobe. I'm wondering if the review was paid for by Adobe. How can your review fail to compare it to Apple supported Prevew app.

"Sledgehammer sold as a nutcracker"

May 04, 2014  |  By joejoes2

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 11.0.04

Pros

Helps you open PDF files

Cons

ENORMOUS
it keeps putting a shortcut on your desktop for no reason
once you've installed it seems to spend most of its time complaining that you haven't paid it enough attention or installed another enormous update

"A complete PITA on my Mac."

February 05, 2014  |  By cydcharisse

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 11.0.04

Pros

For this occasional user there is nothing to recommend.

Cons

Despite making Preview my default PDF opener, Reader insinuated on every PDF I tried to open on the web. I needed Reader for only 1 site but the thing took over every effort to open any PDF.. Fail Fail Fail

Summary

It's bloated and acts like a hog. I hated it.

"No stars from me except min. reqd. to post this review:"

March 15, 2013  |  By psquare11

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 11.0.02

Pros

Cons

Just noticed that this is the first review for this version (v. 11.0.02). I was shocked to find that this update was taking an inordinate amount of time to install, and the time indicator just kept climbing...
when it reached more than an hour and thirty-nine minutes, I decided to abort the install process. I use the old ver. infrequently enough to realize I don't need A-R.

Summary

Why does Cnet post reviews of past versions when most readers find only the current ver. is germane? Goodbye Adobe.

October 24, 2012  |  By mdembski

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 10.1.4

Pros

generally works

Cons

bloat, program is way to big, forms filled in on MAC don't display correctly on Windows and vice versa

Summary

Needs good competition, Reader has turned into bloat that does not really work well.

"Does not work with Firefox under OS X"

June 24, 2012  |  By pcahan

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 10.1.3

Pros

Runs fine as a stand alone.

Cons

Can not open inside browser.
Plugin for Firefox does not work.

Summary

If you use Firefox on a Mac running OS X, disable the plugin until it is fixed. You can still view PDFs in Adobe Reader external to Firefox; it's a pain, but better than crashing.

February 18, 2012  |  By TexHarry

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 10.1.2

Pros

I liked the older verisons, can't get the new ones to work!

Cons

Have been trying to get adobe reader to work on my new windows 7 machine. Downloads okay, will read files already on machine.
When trying to read new files. explorer tells me I must have version 9, which I do. Have been unable to get any help.

"Bloat-tastic!"

January 29, 2012  |  By WonderWoofy

 |  Version: Adobe Reader 10.1.2

Pros

If you dislike free space on your hard drive, this is the solution for you!!!

Cons

>400MB!?!?!? To view a pdf... Although that is with the plug-in. It is ~225MB for the actual application... sooo ~200MB for a plug-in!?!?!? What in gods name do they put in there?

Summary

If you are using a Mac, and you don't need 3D pdf support... move along. This is just more horrible free proprietary software from Adobe. It is unfortunate that 99.9% of people think they need this and Flash.
