There should be no doubt that Apple's decision to block Flash from iOS in favor of HTML5 has spurred Adobe to make sure that its media-rich content-building tool and player Flash remains competitive. Flash Player 11 brings hardware-accelerated graphics support to the platform.

According to Adobe, the new Stage3D technology in the new Flash Player brings combined 2D and 3D acceleration that is up to 1,000 times faster than the previous Flash iterations. While currently Stage3D is supported only for personal computers, it should make its way to mobile devices in future Flash releases. The advancements offered by Stage3D should bring far more complex graphics development for the player, and allow some developers to use it as a viable alternative for their projects, especially for cross-platform efforts.

In addition to accelerated graphics, Flash 11 now is natively in 64-bit code on all supported platforms, which will allow it to better integrate with browsers and plug-ins that are coded in 64-bit. This along with a slew of new enhancements for developers in terms of security improvements, media handling, and better JavaScript integration will enhance the player's use for future development. Flash also comes baked into Google Chrome, and therefore the Chrome OS that powers Google's Chromebooks.

Mac users take note: Flash requires OS X 10.6 or later running on an Intel platform since Adobe removed support for PowerPC Macs in Flash 10.

Although it's possible that HTML5 will at some point unseat Flash as the dominant code for media on the Web, that won't happen for a while yet since HTML5 standards haven't even been finalized. The Flash Player is a must if you want to experience the Web at its fullest, so users at any level of expertise should have no qualms about installing or upgrading.

"Totally useless!!"

September 18, 2012  |  By Clivanmeanit

 |  Version: Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265

Pros

Not a one. If it actually worked for more than a few seconds I might be able to pinpoint a "pro".

Cons

Does not work with Firefox 15. Continually crashes as soon as you start a new firefox session.

Summary

After turning off hardware acceleration it still crashed. After uninstalling flash 11.4 and using flash 10.(2?) it still crashed. Most of the time when it crashed it ended up locking up Firefox. Had to use task mgr to close firefox. Warning box saying flash plug-in crashed popped up as soon as a new firefox session was opened. Canceling the warning box just brought it up repeatedly at least 3 times. Am going to try using Chrome and will never use Firefox again.

"This one finally half works."

September 13, 2012  |  By HSimpp

 |  Version: Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265

Pros

Let's you see flash videos with less crashes than previous versions.

Cons

Still crashes once in a while, still steals focus when you want to type.

As you type it starts doing some weird stuff because of the keboard shortcuts, so you have to make sure you click outside of the player before writing, but even after clicking outside of the player sometimes it won't release the focus, so minimizing and restoring the window may help.

Summary

If you are concerned about the safety of older versions you can try this one.

"Sneak-ware Beware!"

September 08, 2012  |  By Hank3484

 |  Version: Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265

Pros

As usual, Flash is necessary if you want to surf the web.

Cons

McAfee gave Adobe a bunch of money and when I installed Flash Player 11 plugin (v11.4.402.265), they sneakily installed McAfee's security scan without even giving me an opt out! I needed to manually uninstall it afterwards. Not Cool Adobe!

Summary

Come on Adobe, don't do evil! At least give me an opt out check box.

Not Impressed!

"Multiple defects despite ongoing releases"

September 07, 2012  |  By Bill_Levinson

 |  Version: Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.265

Pros

Required to view Flash media. You get what you pay for, though.

Cons

Many user controls, such as "Stop," do not work. I finally disabled Flash in Internet Explorer (except on a trusted exceptions-only basis) due to unwanted media starting to play on Web pages, and said media not even responding to the Stop icon.

Also, right-clicking on "Settings" did not indicate the source of the media--in other words, Flash allows other Web domains to operate in your browser without any means of identifying them. It is therefore no surprise that Flash player is a suspected vehicle for malware.

There is also the issue of parental controls for families with children. If parents cannot identify the source of unwanted media, they cannot add it to a ban list (e.g. via the Hosts file). The same goes for IT departments that enforce corporate computer usage policies, e.g. if unsuitable content appears on a page that is otherwise acceptable.

Summary

Flash Player may be free, but even free products represent the provider's quality and pride in workmanship. These issues would affect my decision whether to buy an Adobe product. Right now, my opinion would be highly negative.
