"Worst Adobe software programming I've seen."

September 30, 2012  |  By craxd

 |  Version: Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2

Pros

None that I can think of.

Cons

Crashes as soon as you try to load an epub e-book.

Hard installation.

Not working on Windows XP, with all the service packs, and updates installed.

Summary

When installing, it says it has to have .Net, 3.5, SP 1 from MS, so you go there. After downloading .Net, 3.5, SP 1, you see that MS says that there is 3 patches for this update, so you download, and install these too. Still, even though the Adobe app launches on its own, when you try to load an epub e-book, it crashes quickly. Also, if it is associated with an epub file, it will not open at all, and crashes.

"Simple but Frustrating to use"

July 06, 2012  |  By davidscalling

 |  Version: Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2

Pros

You can view text.

Cons

1. You can't adjust font size and page size separately. 2. It's extremely hard to tell what page you are on even though page numbers change according to what size your at. 3. You can't tell if your sentence wraps around to the next paragraph on the same page or if you should scroll down to a possible continuation of said paragraph. 4. There is no way possible to view 1 full page at a time, it will only let you increase text size so that you will only see 1/2 a page at like 90 point font. The letters need to be extremely huge to read just 1/2 page. Like I said they give you no way to adjust page size and font separately. 5. It is extremely limited on settings. 6. Because of it's poor layout it's hard to tell where you need to continue reading unless what you are reading obviously continues up and to the right. Otherwise its impossible to tell if you should scroll down to the next page (which is not actually a page but another window with pages within it) or if you should look up & over.

Summary

It sucks big time. Its a very simple software program but it's also too vague and ambitious at the same time. I've seen better digital readers written back in 1990s DOS. Sort of a bad sign that Adobe is perhaps losing touch with form & function. What's obvious to their programmers isn't always obvious to the actual users, specially when they offer us nonsense like this Adobe Digital Editions. Don't throw away your time with this program.

"Can't read my book"

May 29, 2012  |  By Kaseens

 |  Version: Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2

Pros

Checked for soft that could open ePub books, was my first choice, because Adobe product.

Cons

It has problems with showing diacritic language chars (like with cedilla, macron, caron) that get converted to ?. Lacks basic features, no settings. Choose something better.

Summary

If You load book, that You can't read because of different char encoding, at first look, You might say OK - will change it. But there is no settings for this program, just change of view and loading/open books. Just right-click java settings. Cmon, we don't live in ASCII world, and I know that char encoding problems can be pain in %ss. But You give us no option how to change it.

Have impression that app is sort of Frankenstein, assambled from some other application parts and left only minimal functionality and created within week. Looks, that in last time Adobe doesn't want to include much additional options/functionality in they free products. Such philosophy at end just generates useless crap.

"avoid this program if possible"

April 16, 2012  |  By misstudent

 |  Version: Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2

Pros

I had no other options available via my library. I hope better programs exist.

Cons

Deletes all notes as soon as book expires..even if the book is rechecked out after the due date.

Summary

WHY bother reading a textbook with Adobe Digital for graduate school or a PHD program if notes and quotes in specific chapters cannot be saved after the book time expires??? MORE of a pain in the butt than actually having a book in front of you and taking notes with a pencil and paper. NO time is saved, especially when the book is re-checked out and the notes are still gone.

Wasted 3 hours of my time doing research only to have to start again. Thankfully it wasn't more. Be warned!!! Maybe some of the other programs have this fixed. I don't trust this program, which is sad because in the past Adobe usually has useful products. Needless to say I'm a bit frustrated.

"Works well for library books."

January 05, 2012  |  By jidzaporp

 |  Version: Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2

Pros

Quick and easy to use, free, allows pdf viewing on my nook, installed without a burp on my XP box.

Cons

Cannot print from this software, panders to proprietary licensers.

Summary

I don't read on my PC, only my Nook, so I cannot vouch for or against PC viewing. The problems most others are having are because they are using offbeat software like "snow leopard" or Vista or Mac PCs. My video games won't work on a Mac, either. I recommend Windows XP or 7 if one wants to use many different applications. It's the users fault if they use Vista as everyone knows it is even worse than Windows ME. Upgrade to Win 7 or XP. The format complaints are due to the dicey ePub formatting, not this reader. Part of the problem is possibly that it's Adobe software and they are willing to sacrifice robustness to ensure it isn't prone to piracy.

"Pure crap!"

December 19, 2011  |  By kitarpyar

 |  Version: Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2

Pros

Unfortunately, I have some very good books that seem to open with only this software

Cons

Just about everything. I would rather read an e-book in an Acrobat reader than this piece $h!t. No page rotation. Hard time printing.

Summary

Not worth summarizing. Crappy product. Stay away from it if you can.

"Books Are Unreadable"

March 13, 2011  |  By cnetkate

 |  Version: Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2

Pros

The program was able to load the book.

Cons

I can only view a half a page at a time in single page view or fuzzy pages in side-by-side view. Yes, I am on a 13-inch MacBook but there is no way I'm hauling the 21" iMac over to the comfortable chair!

Summary

This app might be ok for casually checking out a reference book but there is no way I can read a novel half page by half page. I am not very sophisticated in these things - shouldn't I be able to adjust how much I see at a time? I must be missing something. Why would anyone bother with such lame software?
I give this app one star because it did load the book - and I can't go any lower.
