One of the most popular and customizable third-party clients in the multiservice chat category for Mac continues to impress. It supports multiple services, including AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Facebook, Windows Live, and Google Chat. Part of what made the original Adium so attractive was the multitude of IM service options, and that still forms the core appeal of this client. The interface is smooth and lean, fitting in well with the Mac OS. The client supports tabbed browsing, encrypted messaging, and you can transfer files to your buddies, though it can be hit or miss depending on what service you're using.

Recent updates have improved cross-service support (both in terms of security and performance), and the app continues to offer extensive options for customization, with a wide range of sounds, themes, colors, and other tweaks--including support for Growl, if you want to keep up with chats when you're not in Adium. Under the hood, the program shares the same open-source core as multiplatform client Pidgin.

Overall, despite some file-sharing quirks, Adium X is a must-download for those looking to connect with multiple services. If you've been looking for a chat client that plays nice with other chat services, Adium is an excellent choice on the Mac.

"Simple and functional chat client"

September 29, 2008  |  By myles taylor

 |  Version: Adium 1.3.2

Pros

Easy to set up multiple accounts. Does everything it's supposed to do in an easy to understand way and doesn't have any unnecessary flash. Easy to combine contacts.

Cons

No voice or video chat. Very hard to incorporate, I understand, but still a con. Preferences can sometimes be confusing and hard to find. File transfers and direct connect are buggy.

Summary

I absolutely love Adium as my primary IM client. I use many different IM clients and it's so nice to just have one window for all of them. One of my favorite things is the ability to combine contacts over multiple IM clients. Also the Chat Transcripts viewer is handy and easy to use. The integration with Growl makes it a top-notch IM client. I do sometimes switch to iChat (for video and voice) and I often switch to the IM default client for file transfers simply because they are very buggy in Adium and often cause it to either crash or the transfer just fails. The reason seems to be different for each client so I wonder if it's not a problem with Adium at all, but it still bares mentioning. Overall, best IM client out there.

"1.3.1 highly unstable on my Intel MacBook (OS 10.4.11)"

September 14, 2008

 |  Version: Adium 1.3.2

Pros

1.3.0 worked (practically) flawlessly for ICQ, AIM, etc.

Cons

1.3.1 crashes consistently - sometimes within seconds of launching, but occasionally running until a menu item - any menu item - is selected.

Summary

Looks like the latest "fix" (1.3.0 --> 1.3.1) broke something.

"It's good, but...."

September 09, 2008  |  By mdobbs1979

 |  Version: Adium 1.3.2

Pros

No multiple chat clients, you can link more AIM screen names than AIM will allow (AIM allows 7, Adium allows more)

Cons

logs me on and off repeatedly at times; frequently tells me my username has been logging on and off too often-even when I haven't been near my computer, crashes occasionally; often only shows part f my offline group list

Summary

Adium is about the only free option for Mac users who want a computer based (as opposed to internet based) multiple program IM client. It has its flaws, and a lot of them, but it's preferable to operating AIM and Yahoo messengers together.

Frankly, I miss trillian and hope that they join the Mac world ASAP
