    "Superior."

    May 27, 2005  |   By Free as a bird

    Pros

Ad-Aware is superior to many "clones" out there. The latest version has many improvements such as; using less memory making the scans much faster than before. The results are more in detail to what was found with an improved gui. I like Ad-aware alot, It's catches alot of things but I always recommend using Spywareblaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, Hijackthis,Winpatrol and using and an Alternative browser along with common sence for an extra layer of security. Ever since using all of these I have had few or no spyware and adware ever since. Highly recommended.

how does one know what to download -- is it a "crap shoot"? I'm not 100% computer literate, but know some - enough to get into trouble.

According to my tests and to client's spyware infested systems, if you want to be infested and infected with tons of malware, spyware, and trojan viruses, install AdAware. It is a JOKE! I'm in the computer repair business and have been repairing computers for more than 15 years. I have tried AdAware and it did nothing but get the computers infected and rather quickly too. I've tried both the pay and the free versions and they're both horrible. About the only thing it does do somewhat well is to report tracks. The best spyware removal tool I've found so far that is free is called Spybot but if it is not configured to scan as deep as possible, then you may as well use nothing at all.

After watching Andy Walker put this product up against top 5 and other anti-spyware. He infected a drive with a trojan that infects it with spyware all day long to see which ones do the best. Here are just a few of the many tested. Each one is tested the same; it is executed then reboots and executed again and reboots to see how many are left.

Adware SE 7 out of 37

Pest Patrol 16 of 37 (voted the best)

MS Anti-Spyware 17 of 37 infectios (none of the new infections though

    SpyBot 7 of 37

    Counter Spy 3-4 of 37

    Mcfee 4 of 37

    Aleria 15 of 37

    Nod32 7 of 37

    Norton 3 of 37
