It's free and it removes a lot of tracking cookies. No one program removes them all.

Warning -- Don't buy the add-on called "Ad-Watch". It doesn't do anything, admittedly by Lavasoft to prevent tracking cookies. I downloaded a new version of Ad-aware after a few months and Ad-watch stopped working. Despite having copies of the invoice, customer number records & paypal records of the payment I was unable to prove to Lavasoft's satisfaction that I was deserving of support. Since it didn't really do anything it was no loss anyhow. But they sent me email at the end of a year asking me to renew!

Ad-Aware is superior to many "clones" out there. The latest version has many improvements such as; using less memory making the scans much faster than before. The results are more in detail to what was found with an improved gui. I like Ad-aware alot, It's catches alot of things but I always recommend using Spywareblaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, Hijackthis,Winpatrol and using and an Alternative browser along with common sence for an extra layer of security. Ever since using all of these I have had few or no spyware and adware ever since. Highly recommended.

I've tested many products on many different machines. And most programs leave a few pieces of spyware here and there. However, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition does not leave a thing. Even the big companies like Symantec can't keep up with these guys. And the best part is that Ad-aware doesn't charge you tons of money to keep your PC safe!
This is the Achilles of anti-spyware. Shame on those who rated this product poorly because you either: A) didn't scan frequently or B) don't know how to use a computer (and Ad-aware can't get any easier to use! It's simple!)

This product completely eradicated spyware from my hard drive. Even finding the ones that had installed themselves in registry. It gives you options for saving or quarantining the "critical" objects.
Cons
Some of the functions aren't that easy to understand. Takes a little more knowledge of technical terminology than the average person has.
