    Version: Ad-Aware 2007 7.0.2.6

    "NO and NEVER."

by JoyceNgo on January 21, 2008

Pros: WAS a good product when it was the SE Personal version, small, easy to use, fast and non-intrusive.

Cons: I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOO disappointed that Lavasoft has stopped updates on Ad-Aware SE Personal and forced everyone (just like Microsoft does) to update to the lastest bloated, crappy and slow 2007 version. This product went from like 5MB to 20MB+, very high on resources, has processes running behind your back and takes 5 times longer to scan. I am also not very pleased with the interface nor have I noticed this product catches anything but traffic cookies. I honestly have NO idea where all the space taken comes from in this product, and why it takes almost more than 20 minutes just to do a SMART scan when the SE personal only took about 2-3 minutes to get the job done.

I am through with this product, and I am trying to find a BETTER alternative on Download.com to replace this useless product.

Although I agree that Ad-Aware SE is FAR better than Ad-Aware 2007, for LOTS of reasons, I still maintain that ANY protection is better than nothing!

I really recommend that people should try Spyware Terminator, which is also available through C/NET. Check it out; it's gotten great reviews, and it works!!! It offers real-time protection, it works quietly in the background, and it catches a whole lot more than just cookies (although I have noticed that Ad-Aware occasionally catches the odd trojan and virus).

Spyware Terminator is easy to program, self-updates automatically, it's totally free, and it has some really useful options. Try it; I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I've tried others, including AVG Anti-Spyware and Cyber Defender; they all serve a good purpose as an added line of defense, but so far, Spyware Terminator is my number-one first choice!!!

Try Spybot Search and Destroy. I have used both Ad Aware Se and spybot for the past few years and Se was great but now that it is pretty much obsolete I would recommend Spybot. It does everything and more just as good as Se did.

Like u said, u cant downlod the newest updates for the SE version, but you can download the definition file itself because that is still the same file and copy and paste it in the Adware directory. It works, it says its not updated, but really it is and your back using the old version. TRY IT.

You can still download updates for Ad-Aware SE Personal although it's not automatic. You have to go to lavasoft.de, security center/definition file updates, and on the right side of the page you'll see 2007 file and one for SE Personal, click on the one under SE Personal, save it to hard disk, extract the defs.ref and copy it to c:\program files\lavasoft\adaware se personal\ and choose to overwrite.

You might want to check out Windows Defender. It's fresh out of beta and works surprisingly well, especially considering its made by Windows.

I was going to try AVG Anti-Spyware, but it didn't get good ratings from people. Maybe I should try it on my own. It was recommended by a few people on Yahoo! Answers too. Thanks, Fred.

Hy cousinkix, I used Nero 8, it was on my laptop and it's also very bloated and heavy on resources. I gave that product a bad review also. Even though it looks nice, it is also confusing and hard to maintain on an average PC.

I don't think it finds any major spyware. Installed it on my new laptop on XP and Vista, still slow. Not sure if it's only me but if this program does have decent detection, at least make it less cluttered. And I hate seeing things that cannot be used unless you pay for it. At least the SE version didn't shove it in your face :x

Thanks for the heads-up. Try AVG's anti-spyware (free edition) which is very thorough altho not as fast in completing scans (choose your level) as AdAware SE was.

I am gonna uninstall the new version of AdAware from my computers. It's too damned slow for me too. New isn't always better. Lavasoft reminds me of Vista and Nero 8. No thanks...

Wait til you try to remove it.

You *can't*: Classic Malicious software, aka: malware Deluxe. (font color-cr** brown)
