"Read the product description carefully"

January 10, 2014  |  By BrianPeaker

 |  Version: Actual ODBC Driver for Open Source Databases 2.9c

Pros

Easy to set up.
Allows import into FileMaker

Cons

The descriptions appear to indicate that one can "easily" connect to tables from the ODBC database in FileMaker. This is not true for some formats - SQLite in my case.
In reality one has to carefully set up mimic tables and fields in FM and then, table by table using an SQL queries, import the data to FM.
Data cannot be written back to the ODBC database.
Believe Filemaker's help - FM does not support connection to SQLite, whatever Actual ODBC Driver might imply.
There are other, free tools which can do this. (No its not free, its AUD 40)

Summary

Rated "poor" because its description implies that it can do more than it can.

"Mac Excel ODBC connections made Easy"

October 11, 2004  |  By lee.joramo

 |  Version: Actual ODBC Driver for Open Source Databases 1.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Ever since Mac OS X and MS Office v.X were released I have searched for an easy to use ODBC connection to get my data stored in Postgresql into Excel. It is sad that my Postgresql databases on my PowerBook can be seen by Windows versions of Excel and Access under Virtual PC running on my Powerbook, but not by Excel v.X. I have tried many other ODBC solutions. Tried to compile various open source solutions, tested expensive commercial solutions. Most of these just did not work, or were very flaky.

When Actual released their ODBC drivers early last summer, I was very happy to find a easy to install and easy to use driver with a Mac like interface. Unfortunately, it was of limited use to me because I could not retrieve VIEWS stored in postgresql. I reported the problem to Actual's support and had a prompt reply. Apparently there is a flaw in Excel v.X. However, Actual said that they were designing a work around. Despite this limitation, I felt that the program was worth paying the registration.

With version 1.3, Actual has implemented the work around, and I can now access my VIEWs, and pull the data into Excel v.X.

While I feel that this Actual's ODBC drive functionality, should already be part of Apple's OS X, MS's Excel or easily implemented via Open Source, the fact of the mater is that it is not. Actual has solved a major problem for me and at a very fair price.
