Summary
Twelve years ago or so, I needed software to do a format. I had no idea that this software is fatal, I learned that i needed the information that was deleted by kill disk. I sent the hard disk to a company that specializes in data recovery .and they said you can not save the data. I had no understanding of the program.
please read "Twelve years ago or so" as
That's why I think that the company who wrote the software should show responsibility and warn users.they should explain clearly the dangerous for the beginners.

"Solved hd not found when installing vista on a laptop."
Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 1.1
Pros
IOLO drive scrubber could not find the hard drive. vista install disk could not find the hard drive. After running this utility, vista installed just fine. Strange most linux installs could find the hard drive.
Cons
The single level of drive erasing does not meet the dod level. But it worked for the problem I was trying to solve.

"Does exactly what I need it to d"
Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 1.1
Pros
Works great. When servicing a virus ridden computer, I just backup what my antivirus progarm will let me have, Then insert the Disk and let er rip. Sinple to use, just no turning back once started. Makes for a great clean install of the OS.
Cons
It is indescriminate when it comes to partions on the Hard Drive. Once run, all partitions are gone. So any chance of reinstall from the recovery partition is gone for good.
Summary
I like Active kill disk for the fact that it has a small footprint, and can be added to a Dos startup disk or onto an auto run CD. It provides an easy way for me to eliminate all viruses from an infected drive and provide a clean enough HD for an error free clean reinstall of the Plateform. (windows) Active Kill disk also examines Hard drive errors and attempts to recover them. With a bit of understanding how a Hard drive works, I can sometimes pinpoint where the problem is and sometimes can partition around the "bad" area to allow the client some time to decide what they want to do with the computer. (Buy a new one, have me build or rebuild this one, or just repalce the drive - then all I have to do is clone it over to the new drive and pull the plug on the old one. Makes for a happy and satisfied customer.
I use Active Kill disk as a last resort to get rid of viruses. there are other ways they can be cleaned, but some like to hang around after the fact. So, what ever is drawing them in, can be quickly "Killed off" just by typing KILLDISK and pressing ENTER. Too easy, but does create a lot of work for me. Backup data, put OS back on, and then put softare back on, then put the datat back and setup the Antivirus program. That is time consuming. But I can gruantee that there are no bugs hanging around on the computer. -
"not what it's cracked up to be, Use DBAN"
Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 1.1
Pros
easy to use
Cons
now it's advertised as doing DoD security level and FREE , but on closer inspection, you would find that the free version doesn't do a tenth of what it is advertised to do, so all in all this one is surely not your best choice for a hard disk eraser,
personally, I highly recommend Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") , it's work's excellent , and completely free, and it's a very strong HDD eraser, much better that this one
dban.sourceforge.net

"Worked fine"
Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 1.1
Pros
Did the job erasing boot info that a normal disk format did not.
Cons
Of course it's very slow.. and only one pass of zero's option is available in free version.. and that's the fastest option. LOL!!

"Does not boot a computer..."
Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 1.1
Pros
Apparently not a boot program.
Cons
nothing. It doesn't work.
-
"Don't waste your time"
Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 1.1
Pros
Nothing... not usable.
Cons
This should not be listed under "free software". This is an extra limited trial version. This version of the software only supports one, very insecure file deletion method. After going through all the bother of creating a boot CD and rebooting the machine, then you find out you have a useless piece of software.
