To burn discs with your PC, you need two things. The first is a CD burner, or (better) a DVD burner, or (better still) a Blu-Ray burner. The second is disc-burning software. For the first, you're probably limited by the burner you already own, and your burner's capabilities will determine what kinds of disc you can burn, how much and what kind of data they can hold, and how long it takes to burn them. But for the second requirement, the burning tool, you have a lot more choices, and a lot of them are free. Active Data Recovery's Active ISO Burner is a free disc-burning utility that is simple to use but offers more sophistication than some premium disc-burning packages. It supports a wide range of devices, including Blu-Ray drives, and three independent burning transport protocols (SPTI, ASPI, and SPTD). You can specify the number of copies to burn, burning mode, and even what happens when the job is done. Recent upgrades include an updated burning engine and Windows 8 compatibility.

Active ISO Burner's installer can also update your PC with any burning transport it lacks. With our permission, it installed the SPTD transport protocol on our system. With a dialog-style interface, drop-down menus, and basic but clear data display, Active ISO Burner is extremely easy to use. We browsed to an ISO image we'd saved in the Source field. There was no need to choose a Target: our DVD burner was the only device on the list. We left the default Mode selection, Track-At-Once, and the default Speed, Auto-Select, though each control offers more options. We could also specify the number of copies to burn, from 1 to 100. An Options button accesses a smaller dialog box with Transport & Cache options and other advanced settings. All that remains is a large Burn button, though you'll find a User's Guide in Active ISO Burner's Start Menu folder that explains how to burn discs.

Active ISO Burner made quick work of burning our ISO image, automatically determining the best speed for our drive. We like this simple tool with not-so-simple capabilities.

"Download security scan - a bust?"

March 23, 2014  |  By markjspinnover

 |  Version: Active@ ISO Burner 2.5

Pros

don't know.. reading the reviews and not eager to download.

Cons

other reviews tell it all

Summary

If this program has downloads, that speaks volumes against the 'security scan' that occurs whenever a file is downloaded. \
Seems like it just gives a warm fuzzy feeling without actually doing anything.

"Could be a good product- but not from CNET"

February 17, 2014  |  By fauna99

 |  Version: Active@ ISO Burner 2.5

Pros

Seemed to work but uninstalled it because of concurrent browser changes from CNET.

Cons

It came through CNET and included very close to malware.

Summary

Don't trust downloads from CNET anymore- too many associated problems. Too bad- they used to be good.

"Worked beautifully"

February 14, 2014  |  By dd64sg

 |  Version: Active@ ISO Burner 2.5

Pros

Smooth Operation

Cons

There wasn't any as I used the direct download link instead of the cnet crap installer.

Summary

Recently my motherboard died and I had to upgrade it. After upgrading vista refused to activate, so I downloaded a bunch of linux distros to switch that computer to linux. I needed to burn those ISOs to DVD as I usually don't use DVDs but here it was necessary to boot with those DVDs so I downloaded this software It burned about 10 DVDs containing different distro isos without a problem. And all those DVDS work perfectly.

"Works but beware of bundled software"

December 16, 2013  |  By Isabella278

 |  Version: Active@ ISO Burner 2.5

Pros

It works for smaller ISO files

Cons

Does not work on larger ISO files - stops half way reporting an error writing.

Summary

I was able to use it for smaller ISO files only, e.g., files that install one program each. Trying to use it for larger programs/suites resulted in errors every time.

However, this download gave me more headaches than help. As I downloaded some programs from CNET in the past without any problems, I just chose the "complete" or "express" installation - big mistake. I got three unwanted items that I had no idea I was downloading: (1) Some no brand free backup software (I pay for my backup with a reputable site - I don't just backup my files to some no-name site). I was able to uninstall it pretty easily. (2) I got a Connect toolbar in Chrome, IE and Mozilla, with extensions in all three programs, and my home site and search engine were changed to Connect. I had to reset all three to their original settings to remove the extensions and redo my home sites/search engine preferences. (3) I got ScorpionSaver malware - adware-adpeak program. This software gives you large pop ups with ads from competitors every time you are on some shopping site. This program I am still fighting with - and it has been over a month. I uninstalled ISO burner and all other programs, scanned my PC with McAfee, and McAfee found, quarantined and removed the program. However, since then, nearly daily, I have pop ups from McAfee that they stopped a potentially unwanted malware running, and then I scan and again quarantine and delete the adware program. The next day, it pops up again.

If you want to download anything from CNET - I will not be doing so in the forthcoming future - please be aware that they are bundling some of their "partner software" programs into the downloads, so NEVER click on either express or complete installation, but go to custom installation and uncheck anything else they are suggesting for you. Since CNET calls these programs "partner software" (per their response to my on Facebook - no other way to contact them), they are likely making money off everyone downloading these programs, and giving us headaches only.

I hope that CNET will clean up their act and stop that trashy "partner software" that is nothing but trouble.

"DO NOT download"

December 06, 2013  |  By adeline_csl

 |  Version: Active@ ISO Burner 2.5

Pros

NO PROS. Tricks you into downloading things that you do not want. It downloads even after you said NO.

Cons

1. The recommended install option included useless search bar and other browser plugins.
2. When you choose the custom install, it still downloads plugins and change your browser settings WITHOUT your consent.
3. Also, it includes about 5 different apps that will ACCESS and STEAL your information.

Summary

If you are NOT tech-savvy at all, DO NOT download. Even if you are, use another software, it's not worth your time.

Updated on Dec 6, 2013

When you are going through the installation process, select DECLINE on those apps. Please be aware that the search bar browser plugins are unavoidable - it installs whether you decline or accept.

"Installs browser extensions without approval."

December 06, 2013  |  By JPHiggs

 |  Version: Active@ ISO Burner 2.5

Pros

didn't give it a chance to run, my browser immediately redirected and installed a bunch of plugins upon installing Active@ ISO Burner.

Cons

Automatically installs horrible browser plugins, even when the option to not install anything else is selected. Hijacks and runs unwanted items and advertisements.

Summary

don't download it unless you want your browser hijacked and filled with ads.
