Editors' Review

This feature-rich program places an unobtrusive calendar on your desktop. You can quickly access your tasks and see details of upcoming events by double-clicking the day or the sidebar. Active Desktop Calendar supports multiple users, using layers to store their profiles. You can connect to other people's calendars via LAN to see changes in their schedules, and you can have the application display your Outlook information. The utility doesn't consume much memory, especially considering all the cool stuff it does.

We did notice a few shortcomings in this generally excellent program. For example, though the window for adding a new note contains a subject line and a body field, only the subject-line text appears on the calendar and the sidebar. On the bright side, you can switch among several desktop images and set the program as the default screensaver, which will display several world clocks. Overall, the functionality and design of Active Desktop Calendar make it useful for home and business users.

"Deadlines were never so PRETTY..."

Clean Interface, Attractive Themes, Elegant Layouts, and does EXACTLY what I wanted a desktop calendar to do. You have an immediate "snapshot" of the month at hand OR also have LAST month/NEXT month OR have the NEXT 2 months viewable. You can see when you have appointments coming up and pretty much use the Calendar as a REFERENCE for anything TIME related. The included themes are cute but even better is the ability to SKIN your own themes so this one is definitely ONE OF THE PRETTIEST...

The other reviewer had a few valid points about this program eating up a little more memory than other programs. Their argument about this program being ALOT of eye candy is also valid but that is where I think SOME of us will differ. I wanted a desktop calendar that was ATTRACTIVE to compliment my wallpaper and generally IMPROVE the boring desktop I have to face on a DAILY BASIS. This program does NOT lack in features but it could do SOME THINGS BETTER to appease those detail oriented people who want a WORKING ORGANIZER. You have the SIDEBARS which give you information at a glance but I think MOST people will NOT like this feature. It clutters up the desktop and generally gives you TOO MUCH INFORMATION at a glance. If you HIDE them then all you have are the THUMBNAILS on the calendar itself which is ELEGANT and PRETTY but then there is NO DIFFERENTIATION between events. So you see a THUMBNAIL but you have to HOVER to see what it is where it woudl have been NICE to see a CAKE, a FLOWER, etc to denote WHAT TYPE OF APPOINTMENT IT IS. There are OTHER programs that are MORE detail oriented with COLOR CODING, STREAMING MESSAGES, etc, etc but I wanted soemthing SIMPLE, ELEGANT, and FUN. This fit PERFECTLY and if they can TWEAK some options then users can actually make it MORE DETAIL ORIENTED if they so fancied. The ONLY COMPLAINTS I have is that

1) The thumbnails are FIXED and you cannot use different images for DIFFERENT types of tasks.

2) The Outlook integration is a little clunky since you have to have Outlook OPEN to actually be able to reference it. They DO have an OUTLOOK import option but they should AUTOMATE it so you do NOT have to manually update this program with NEW tasks.

"Eye candy"

Easy to use/

Looks pretty

Lack of features (most are geared towards it being cute)

I downloaded this and Calendarscope Beta 3 for a side by side comparison.

While Calendarscope gives you a day, week, workweek and month view, ADC gives just the month.

Cscope lets you zoom into any day to see an expanded list of the entire days events, along with their times, locations, and whether you have an alarm set for each event.

ADC does not. You have to select each event individually, and even then, it only shows the event in the same window you used to create it, which is not ideal for taking in the entire days schedule. You don't need to see all the set-up options for an event if you simply want the day's schedule.

While both let you attach icons, only Csope lets you color-code the category of an event (work, travel, etc.), which is nice for separating business, and personal events. You can also create your own categories.

ADC's Task list merely lists the task name.

Cscope lets you categorize the tasks by subject (name), due date, category (running, overdue, completed, etc) as well as letting you set alarms for them. ADC has alarms only for appointments.

Mousing over an event in month view will give you the event, time, and location in Cscope. Doing the same in ADC just give you the event name.

I will say that ADC's mini desktop calendar (giving you a 1-3 month view), along with the list of notes (events) and tasks is nice, but like the others here, I found it to be too much clutter after awhile. I found myself going to the conventional view and shutting it down when I was finished. Also, again, just the event and task name are listed, no times, no locations.

One last consideration. After about 20 minutes of use, ADC was costing me about 10,000K of memory. Cscope? 2,100K.

ADC paints a pretty picture, but if doesn't have the basic features I need then that's all it is.

Hope this helps your decision.
