Personal finance programs are a dime a dozen these days, so the bar is set pretty high when it comes to performance. AceMoney offers tools for creating and maintaining budgets, tracking investments, and even online banking. And while it successfully let us do all of the above, we found that it lacked protection for sensitive information.

The program's interface is very businesslike, and its simple, straightforward design makes the array of options easy to understand and navigate. Large commands at the top of the window let you toggle between seven categories, including accounts, portfolio, banks, payees, and reports. Although the data is presented in an easy to understand spreadsheet format, sample entries are included. A left-hand menu changes depending on which category is selected, and options are clearly labeled. With your portfolio, for example, you can opt to download the latest stock prices, or re-invest dividends. We were able to add banking and credit card information, and schedule bill payments with no problems, and we liked the calendar-style view of money in and out for the month. We also were able to quickly and easily view cash flow and transaction reports. We found a lot to like in AceMoney's simple approach, but we couldn't help feeling vulnerable entering data because the program isn't password protected and doesn't encrypt your private data.

AceMoney includes an online tutorial if needed, although the program's Help file should answer most questions. While AceMoney worked fine, we like to have total confidence that our data is secure. We suggest you look for a financial management program that keeps your private data private.

"Extremely Overrated"

December 24, 2014  |  By rjmaerz

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.35.1

Pros

Minimalist Design

Cons

Cannot reconcile MS Money accounts
Amateur design
Buggy

Summary

I bought this program because it received such rave reviews. Now I realize that either MechCad paid the reviewers to give them great reviews or those reviewers are just completely clueless. This program is a pre-school version of MS Money, and if you're starting from scratch, it might work for you. If you, however, try to import all of your MS Money files into AceMoney, the program cannot understand how to reconcile the accounts with one another. To top it off, I've never been able to shut AceMoney down without going into the Activity Monitor and forcing it to quit (it opens 4-5 subprograms and all of them need to be forced to quit otherwise the program freezes and never shuts down). This program is complete junk in my opinion. Stick with the free version of MS Money Sunset Deluxe.

"Best program for a home user I found."

June 20, 2014  |  By JEHarbeson

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.35.1

Pros

Ace Money does everything I need it to do and more. I do in fact have it password protected although the authors article state that cannot be done. My data is encrypted and stored securely on an external drive as well. I highly recommend giving the program around the block. I used the free version for several month prior to upgrading to the paid version. The free version allows you to maintain two accounts, I needed more so I upgraded.

Cons

Problems with connecting directly yo my bank for downloads, but that is more than likely my lack of knowledge to do it. I just download and import my info that way and it works fine for me.

Summary

Our payroll and benefits clerk at the County has also began using this program for her personal finances. She is a CPA and took my recommendation to try it. She has recommended this to all the County employee's where I work to try for their personal use. What does that say?

"Great program! CNet needs to update their review."

May 03, 2014  |  By BDunmer

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.35.1

Pros

-Easy to use. Offers advanced features, but doesn't force the ordinary user just tracking bank transactions to deal with with them if they don't want to.
-Only program that imported my transactions from Quicken with no tinkering required.
-DOES support passwords and account file encryption-- the review is outdated.

Cons

--Rather basic user interface; functional, but could use artistic polish.

Summary

I tested with the lite version, which offers all features free for two accounts. Upgrading to the pro version for unlimited accounts.

"Couldn't find my accounts"

January 06, 2013  |  By Redskins4Life

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.33.1

Pros

None - I couldn't even use it.

Cons

Didn't work for me

Summary

I got AceMoney as a possible replacement for Quicken 2010 since I didn't want to be forced to upgrade to Quicken Deluxe 2013. Should have saved myself the 30 bucks and stayed with Quicken. Set up my account and activated online services (my credit union was listed in the drop-down menu). Entered my user ID and password and tried to update my account. got a "failed" message that said "the financial institution does not have an account identified by this number". I use the exact same user ID and password in Quicken and it found all fuor of my accounts in about 5 seconds. Also tried setting up a credit card account using USAA Federal Savings Bank. Entered username and password. Also failed with a "some or all of the information you entered is invalid". Back to Quicken I go.

"So Far, So Good!"

September 28, 2012  |  By terileighspringer

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.20.7

Pros

I have not been using this program long, but I have been very satisfied with it so far! I have found that
-The design/layout seems well done to me - very "user friendly"
-This program has virtually almost all of the features that I, personally, was looking for.

Cons

My bank was one of those not listed under "direct connect". Hopefully it will become an available option in the future. In the mean time, however, I was pleased to see that there was still a pretty simple "work around" which still allows me to download my information fairly easily.

Summary

As indicated, I haven't used this program long, but I anticipate that it will meet/exceed all of my needs and expectations. I felt that the price was quite reasonable for a reliable, very functional program. I still have a lot to learn about it, but so far, so good...

"Not what they advertised!Don't buy ACEMONEY!"

March 09, 2012  |  By weedswords

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.20.5

Pros

None, not what they advertised. Do not purchase this software.

Cons

I tried the free download and exercised comparing it to several other programs. I am Technical Support Analyst so decently experienced. Used their files and saw it connect but since the accounts were bogus, stocks were not real, it seemed the connectivity was not a problem. We use a Hughesnet Satellite connection and have successfully used Money for years, even AFTER it was no longer supported. We purchased the full licensed version of ACEMONEY and IT NEVER worked. I contacted support multiple times, got ridiculous answers (stupid user answers) and they refuse to refund. They have NO ONE you can talk to and very poor service policies.

Summary

Don't buy it. I downloaded MoneyDAnce and it worked the FIRST TIME. So it was the Acemoney software, not our connectivity and not our experience.

"Plain and simple but NOT a replacement to Quicken"

January 06, 2012  |  By astectv3

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.19.1

Pros

Straight forward, clean accounting. Looks rather simplistic and basic to use and set-up.

Cons

DOES NOT compete with Quicken or any similar application for that matter. Their marketing hype is exaggerated. The banking that it is supposed to work seamlessly is limited. Unfortunately for me, I listened to the hype thinking they were legit and this would replace Intuit as stated. What I found, since I paid upfront without a trial, is software that WILL NOT communicate to either of the two banks I use. I have Quicken, and it is not a problem anywhere. Not only that, since it cannot download current status, I cannot do any Bill-Pay either, which was my main objective. After emailing support (you can't talk to them on the phone), their reply was that I should have received the Trial version and they ASSUMED I had done that and was satisfied. So much for taking a company's word in good-faith. They of course refused to credit me the purchase even though this wasn't even a physical version of the software.

Summary

All-in-all, buyer beware! If you don't mind doing a OFX file download from your bank, IF able to, and then uploading this to the application just to see what is in the bank... you're OK. If you want to do Bill-Pay, of course you can forget it. HOWEVER, if you have a large bank like Bank of America you MIGHT be OK as well.

"Great Home Accounting"

October 23, 2011  |  By klwillits

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.19.1

Pros

Easy to use
Unlimited # of Accounts

Cons

Poor tutorial
Item numbering confusion

Summary

This is my 3d year using this software. So I have a good bit of experience using the software. I have used Quicken and MS Money and they are difficult to learn or use. Out of the box it is easy to set up accounts and use the software. It has a lot of nice features that make it easy to navigate. It has a number of reports and charts and it has a good budgeting capabilities.

"Poor Help Information"

July 23, 2011  |  By vwsam

 |  Version: AceMoney 4.19

Pros

easy to use interface

Cons

Poor help information
Triggered my bank into thinking it was Quicken

Summary

I tried the demo. At first I liked it, but then when I tried to balance my bank account, it would not let me tell it the ending balance, which came up differently from my bank statement. Help window was useless, as was the knowledgebase at the website.
I also downloaded from my bank but unfortunately my bank thought it was Quicken and it triggered an automatic sign-up for a service that costs $10 a month with my bank; I was not given any warning by Ace Money about this.
