I recommend doing the 7-pass (standard but not default), probablly the best free shredder out there.

Summary
I had a file which cause explorer to crash every time i even so much as right clicked on it, so i had no way of getting rid of it. Even when by some miracle i managed to click delete, windows claimed "this file is being used by another program" so in desperation I headed for download.com, found this and in literally 1 minute I had downloaded, installed and used file shredder to remove it completely...forever from my system, very very useful and highly recommended

Summary
Testing the results shows that using the quick 2-pass is ineffective. Using PC Inspector Recovery the files deleted with this are recoverable. Using the 7-pass they are not.
