"Used to be great - now crashes regularly."
Version: Abbott CanOpener 5.0
Pros
This used to be a great product and saved my skin many times when data gor corrupted. It was relatively easy to use though it could have been improved.
Cons
Version 5.0 does not seem to be compatible with OSX 10.4 and just keeps crashing. so it is now useless.

"Doesn't open Apple's \"Pages\""
Version: Abbott CanOpener 5.0
Summary

How can a $65 program boast that it will open practically any program and not open a simple word processing file like "Pages" from Apple? Don't do what I did, make sure you check before you buy. -
"Search for exact phrases!"
Version: Abbott CanOpener 5.0

I am a big enthusiast of CanOpener. It can be combined with Spotlight
to make an excellent search engine for everyday use. Spotlight is
fast, but limited. CanOpener is slow, but powerful. Suppose you wish
to do an exact phrase search. First choose one word in the phrase and
ask Spotlight to create a Smart Folder for you with all files having
that word in them. Then ask CanOpener to search the saved folder for
the exact phrase. This cuts down the search time dramatically. Once
you have the list of files in CanOpener, there are other advantages
over Spotlight. You can click on an item in the list to see the
surrounding text, indeed the entire file, without opening the
application. In Spotlight, you have to use the application to see the
text, and the date modified changes. Besides that, Spotlight is hard
to find on the desktop if you want to return to the list. With
CanOpener, I can quickly check a long list of files, and focus on the
few I am interested in. I can also copy and paste material directly
into my application. I don't know why this is not on everyone's Dock -

c'mon guys this is still useful stuff - first it can open just about everything (even corrupted stuff) and second it is around since about 15 years. If you need it you gladly like to spend 65 bucks - otherwise just dont. o.k. Dont mock about things which are useful to others pls. -
"Correct version number?"
Version: Abbott CanOpener 5.0
Summary

Is VT listing the correct version number? I've had v5.0 for many months. Finder "Get Info" shows a date of 8 Aug 2002.
Hardly needed anymore for the "average" OS X user. Still helpful for some specialized users though as noted below. -
"No need"

I haven't had a file I couldn't open in years... What we need is more support for standards so that there will NEVER be any need for an app like this. I suppose there may be some for whom the price is worth while.
