"Excellent application..."
Version: AVS Document Converter 1.0.3.158
Pros
Simple download and install.
The GUI is very strait forward and easy to understand.
User friendly.
Fast conversion time.
Impressive variety of file formats it can convert.
No feature limits - Nothing grayed out.Cons
Not a free application. Only an evaluation version.
Should be listed as "Free To Try - cost $ to buy".
DOC conversion is only in .docx format. (Only limitation I found.)Summary
Does what it says!
I needed to convert a .pdf to .doc format. Regarding .doc format, it only converts to .docx which is the MS Office 2010 format. Afterward I opened the file in Open Office and saved it in MS's .doc format. Mission accomplished. The various file formats it converts are impressive.
I was extremely disappointed after installing it to find this is only an evaluation version. It only allows you a total of 30 uses/conversions before you have to purchase a license and register it. The only clue I had was reading the EULA during installation. Nowhere was there any indication it was evaluation until the point of installation. A cheap shot in my book. However, there are no limitations for the evaluation-period conversions other than 30 file conversions (nothing grayed out).
Over all, I'd say if you need a document conversion application this I think is a good choice. Even if you only use it occasionally here and there, it's a good tool to have at your disposal. True, there are numerous ways to convert files from one format to another, but the variety of formats it converts under one hood should cover bases for just about any user or office needs. I'm as cheap as they come when it comes to software and opt for the free versions with VERY VERY rare exception. This is one of those exceptions IMO. If you can get it at the limited time sale price for an unlimited lifetime license (as of this notation) it's worth the investment even for the occasional user. At the regular lifetime license price it puts it in the "only if you must have" category for businesses or those that use it constantly on a regular basis. They also offer an annual license which is palatable if you need to convert more than the evaluation limit of 30 files. During installation it asks if you want it embedded in your Explorer right-click context menu. Nice if you have lots of files to do regularly.
This is a 32 bit application which I installed on a Windows 7 machine. A nice little application that does what it says. It'll save you jumping through hoops with numerous steps / applications to get the job done. If you need to convert files from one format to another, set a restore point before installation and give it a try! -
"misrepresented as free"
Version: AVS Document Converter 1.0.3.158
Pros
none that I can find
Cons
This should be pulled from CNET or properly classified. It's NOT a fully functional free program.
Summary
Not only is this NOT free, if you try to use it as a trial copy, you get a watermark on your output making them unusable for all practical purposes.
This is merely a demo of the functions that are available in the paid version of the program. -
"This is not free"
Version: AVS Document Converter 1.0.3.158
Pros
Did not use it.
Cons
Annoying splashes and monolog boxes on startup.
No warning at all until you have installed and use it. Then it tells you that there is a 30 files limitation.Summary
Uninstalled.

"NOT free as indicated"
Version: AVS Document Converter 1.0.2.154
Pros
It "may" do a good job; I'm sure how long I should wait for it to do a simple 23 page document, It's been going for some time now.
Cons
It is extremely slow. A 23 page document is converting at the rate of way less than one percent per minute.
Summary
First and foremost, as downloaded ad installed, you get a trial copy, so it's not free. Until you do activate it, the program says you will have a watermark added to your pages.
OK, after over a half hour on a reasonably fast machine, the "conversion" completed. Actually the source was 33 pages, not 23.
Updated on Jan 3, 2011
However, the output file showed 43 pages; a portion of the cover image on the first page, followed by 42 "blank" pages.
And the only message received was a popup window claiming: "Conversion is completed successfully!"
