"It used to be way better."

    November 7, 2014  |   By Darren Dheilly

Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 2015.0.5557

    Pros

It keeps you safe on line and that is essential today. I still use the free one and I was happy until AVG told me one day after an update, that I did not have the resources to use it effectivly..." No biggie as I was planning to increase my Ram anyway and went to 2 GB on my old Dell laptop and all was good. I still use the old 2013 AVG one and I am happy with it,

    Cons

But I tried the new free one here on my shinny HP desktop and I tried the on line,
or the On Demand scan. It ran slow - OK, but what made me really mad was it removed my "rundll" and each time I start my system it Beeps twice telling me that rundll is gone. AVG free removed it and did not even reinstall it when I tried to roll it back - AVG It thought it was a Virus... Now my rundll is gone into "Zen" space - The "Zen" What ? and My stem is really slow now...

    Summary

It was too Bloating and I do not like the Nagware telling me to update it. So use the 2014 free one, Run an on demand scan and maybe you too will just sit and wonder : "What Now ?" My system has to go to the shop. I do not want to reinstall my OS. for one file, as the "Extract" command did not work. and with no rundll the Windows repair option did not work, and the system restore did not help either.

    "Made Firefox unusable"

    November 7, 2014  |   By Dogen183

Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 2015.0.5557

    Pros

    - Worked great until I upgraded

    Cons

    - The SafeSearch and whatever else it added to Firefox caused the browser to balloon, such that if I reboot my computer and then open Firefox I immediately get a warning that I'm low on memory.

    Summary

I had to uninstall both AVG and Firefox to claw back my RAM. Firefox I reinstalled.

    "one of the best"

    November 6, 2014  |   By ChoiceVoice

Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 2015.0.5557

    Pros

-has improved over previous version: is much lighter.
-does a thorough job at protecting your surfing habits (the additional software many are so concerned with, linkscanner, is very useful and effective at protecting your internet usage. in the past it was buggy, but seems to be working good now. nice to see they have ironed out the problems. i have tried several and only mcafee siteadvisor and bitdefender's trafficlight are in the same league. all the others are definitively inferior).
-avg proxy and search protection is excellent.
    -solid scores in private labs.
    -respectable company.
-repaired a installation bug a previous version had.
-honest reporting (hacked programs are identified as hacked, not as trojans to scare user)

    Cons

solid free protection ... what's not to like? has some reg scanners and performance stuff or something (not sure if they are paid upgrade or what ... i don't use them, just pretend they're not there and you'll stay happy:) also, turn off notifications is the settings.

    Summary

avg had taken a bit of a bump in the last several years. this new version seems to have set it back on track, and placed it near the front of the pack once again. good to see this software giant has come out swinging again.

    Updated on Nov 29, 2014

-i've been trying their quick tune up feature, it is free but has an upgrade. i find registry cleaners an odd feature for antivirus companies, cuz they can sometimes screw your system up. that said, i like registry cleaners and tried it. it ran good on my system. included in scan and cleanup was 1) registry cleaner 2) junk files 3) disk defragger 4) broken shortcuts. all in all, even though i like it, if you're inexperienced with computers, perhaps just ignore this feature. i do numerous backups just incase.

-also has a dedicated rootkit scanner.

    "WARNING - ADVANCED USERS ONLY"

    November 5, 2014  |   By rodrupp

Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 2015.0.5557

    Pros

The anti virus itself is useful and easy to use

    Cons

REPEATEDLY tries to install other AVG products which are nothing but MALWARE and BLOATWARE!
Uses sneaky tactics to get you to accidentally install other AVG products!
During instalation, DO NOT click "Automatic Install (recommended)". Select CUSTOM INSTALL and remove all items (unless there is one you really want).

    Summary

Unfortunately AVG is one of the few free, good antivirus programs. Use it only if you are willing to deal with annoying requests to install useless AVG products. Do not install this for your mom / grandfather / friend who is bad with technology / etc.

    "I love it!!!"

    October 28, 2014  |   By pbike908

Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 2015.0.5557

    Pros

Free, and doesn't bother me with pop ups to buy the full version! I also recommend free version of Malwarebytes and TDSS killer. Granted, I probably don't have stout real time protection, but manually running Malwarebytes and TDSS killer periodically makes me feel secure.

    Cons

Not the full version, but good enough for me!

    Summary

    Updated on Oct 28, 2014

I was a user of free Avast, however, I switched due to Avast annoying me with pop ups to buy the full version.

    "AVG Free The silent protector."

    October 26, 2014  |   By paulnvfc

Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 2015.0.5557

    Pros

I have tried AVG Free in the past and it has slowed my browsing down, but not this version. There are hardly any popups trying to get me to buy the paid versions unlike Avast free which nags you every day. This is great for free keep up the good work AVG.

    Cons

Not really a con but I wish there was a quick scan feature.

    "Used to be good"

    October 24, 2014  |   By Mr.Mega

Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 2015.0.5557

    Pros

Might stop viruses; not really sure now since the focus seems to be only on creating pop-ups

    Cons

Pop-ups. Just upgraded to version 2015, even though it is currently 2014, I guess they can't read a calendar correctly or think they are a car manufacturer now.
Upon returning to computer I had FOUR AVG pop ups for 1st scan, for restarting, protecting from threats (really?? just ran a scan and no threats were found last night.. so are you saying YOU installed them?) and then a panel and naturally, another replaced icon on the desktop to be deleted... again.
Also, if you have auto-scan set for middle of the night so as not to slow down system when needing it, it can randomly set of loud noise/alarm when done for some asinine, idiotic, full-on retard reason so it can wake up the entire house at 4 or 5am for no reason.

    Summary

Used to be great.. the best (I've been working on computers since `98). Now, it seems more interested in making harassing noises and causing pop-ups for this and that and scan this and shove that.
I've installed AVG on A LOT of people's computer, many of which have wound up buying the full version (for some reason). No longer installing it. Too many full updates that seem designed just to try and get people to overlook the fact it is default-checked to trial setting... THEN I get a call about it, "Why does it say expired?!"
Removing items from a computer without authorization is also what I would consider VIRUS behavior.... so, it really should detect itself. A simple program to open a game faster, skipping/doing steps for you is not a virus - says it is a 'Possible Hack Tool" POSSIBLE. Same with an auto-clicker which is great if you play FB games to send/receive gifts and don't enjoy sitting there for well over a minute clicking over and over returning gifts; set to 1 second intervals and 100 clicks, then GO (and, go grab coffee)... but, that too, is a "Possible Hack Tool" and even though added to exemption list 100 times, it still gets deleted, over and over. Why is the mouse itself not a hack tool since it, too, can click? Or, the monitor, since it shows WHERE to click?
I have many computers to test on; going to start in trying out other Anti-V programs from now on. Good riddance to spammy rubbish.
