"AVG is EVIL. Period."
Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 2013.0.3272
Pros
NONE -- This IS a virus. Do not install it or any of its components.
Cons
Can't get rid of it no matter what I do. DO NOT install AVG's so-called "un-installer"...it's another scam.
AVG is aggressive and took over my Google Chrome. I re-set the home page a dozen times. I reset my search engine preference a dozen times.
There is some routine in there that resets AVG as the search engine and home page. I manually removed what I could.
I finally got rid of Google Chrome. Firefox and IE were salvageable.
I ran three different anti-virus programs (including Malwarebytes). I've gone through regular un-install. I've deleted files manually.
I used Malwarebytes FileAssassin to get rid of components that would not delete.
And, still I had to remove Google Chrome entirely.Summary
AVOID. AVOID. AVOID.

"Still the Best"
Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 2013.0.3272
Pros
I've never gotten a virus while running AVG and now it provides less strain on my system than previous versions.
Cons
Tries to force the AVG toolbar on you as well as force AVG's own custom search page instead of whatever default you want. I don't want either of those things.
They also ditched their Gaming Mode which allowed you to temporarily disable the software for gaming so you could get maximum speed/resources out of your computer.Summary
I've been using AVG Anti-virus since about 2007 because I read in a tech magazine that it had the highest block rate among free antivirus programs (and beat out popular paid ones such as Norton and McAfee). It's never let me down and continues to make improvements in usability. Where other suites act as though their approach to stopping virus attacks is bogging down your system so much that a virus won't be able to use it either, AVG allows my computer to run fast.

"Switched to Avast!"
Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 2013.0.3272
Pros
Doesn't seem to slow down computer or use up much resources. Rated as one of the better freebie antivirus software offerings.
Cons
Glaring bug that many share. No easy fix from AVG site. Gave it two star rating for gross software problem that AVG doesn't address - at least on their free version. Otherwise, I'd give it five stars.
Summary
I've used AVG Free for many years, and have been quite satisfied with it until an alert from the software that stated, "Resident Shield component not active." This means that the program is not updating itself as it should, leaving one vulnerable to potential threats. Every time I booted up my system, AVG would hang on updating itself, chugging and churning for at least 4-5 minutes, only to shut down and restart without a current update.
After checking several forums (including Cnet), it was revealed that many others also have the same problem. I realize that this the free version and that support is virtually nonexistent, but, if a problem such as this is apparently so widespread, how hard is it to post a fix on the AVG site to keep the AVG name from flopping face down in the dirt?
I tried several suggested fixes, but none of them worked. Others that have tried them also failed to fix their machines.
As for addressing this issue, the AVG site when searched comes up with "0 results were found". Even their own forums has a section totally devoted to this specific issue.
I got fed up and uninstalled AVG, installed Avast, and am very pleased with Avast's antivirus protection. Highly recommended for a freebie from various onsite review sources, and I concur. Haven't looked back since. Bye-bye AVG. -

"Worthless program!"
Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 2013.0.3272
Pros
It is Free
Cons
Bogs down computer speed and performance!! If your computer is really fast AVG will slow it down to turtle pace at times. AVG has never performed well when a virus attacked my computer.
Summary
Not worth the time it takes to download and install this program. There are much better antivirus programs out there that will protect your computer from malware than this one! Malwarebytes for sure

"It became the very Trojan it tried to defeat."
Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 2013.0.3272
Pros
It downloaded and installed very quickly.
Cons
The program installed in a foreign language, which was very undesirable. It worked by deleting or stalling certain drivers, causing complexities. AVG put up a "mask" or shield, making it impossible to locate by windows explorer, other tools or "malicious software removal" programs. Attempts were made to turn off the program; it had windows ask permission, which it flatly denied. Breaking down or renaming was not permitted, and Windows security was not allowed to make changes, either. This left no options of use to the installer. The only way to remove it was by downloading an AVG Removal program through the same company that created it.
Summary
By hijacking certain drives and not allowing the computer user to perform desired functions, it became very annoying; for the programs that did work, they were incredibly slow...it did not allow flash player to work appropriately, either. In summary, AVG Free became the very Trojan it claimed to block. Do NOT download!
