"Free version is great"
Version: AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 2013.0.3345
Pros
This is literally the best free antivirus program that I have found to date. It catches things that Norton and McAfee miss! I have fixed numerous computers with this program that were infected with viruses and had out-of-the-box protection from the big name brand pay software.
It is a definite recommend for older computers. The program is a light weight non-memory intensive alternative to big heavy programs that claim 100% protection for your computer.
Yes, it does real-time scanning and removal of threats without hijacking system resources.Cons
There are a few tricks to keeping the program free, but not as bad as some freeware. The installs and updates can have toolbars and "free trials" thrown in that are automatically checked. If you aren't careful you can blow through it and get some annoying things you weren't expecting. The AVG toolbar can be helpful in warning you of phishing sites, but still it's an additional toolbar that makes your internet browser viewing window that much smaller.
I turn the firewall off. It takes too much training. I think that the one built into windows is better at recognizing a real threat as opposed to something I want. It's probably more prudent to have running for the general home user.Summary
The pay version of AVG has remained on Top 10 lists of the best antivirus software for years. The free version is slimmed down and only missing a few features like the ability to work with instant messaging and download scanning (but once the threat tries to act, it squashes it).
