Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.138
"in one word: s u x!!!"
Pros: i like that it's free...
Cons: ...but every time a new version comes out, it screws up the one that it is replacing; now, it would even do automatic updates and when i go manually for daily virus updates, it cannot connect and to either 1- check my connection, 2- their server is down, 3- wait until another time...same crap happened w/firefox: the new one screwed up the old one, so i got rid of it.

You may find your configuration settings for are what "s u x!!!" Dump any non-avg embedded updating (scheduled tasks in control panel for instance.)
Inside AVG, set up the update options (daily, weekly, what time of day, etc...) If you use dial up, I'm sorry... any programs that self update first must go through the hit and miss business of your browser coming on, dialing up the server, establishing a connection, KEEP the connection as you download, etc... However, if you have a cable modem or dsl, updating with the embedded AVG updater is fast, simple, and... I really can't figure out how one could screw it up?!?

Oh yes...and...you may want to check your firewall settings...THAT sounds like it is the cause of your problems....it's most likely blocking avg from connecting out.

The fact that 99% percent of people who use this program do not have any problems....including your issue that you are having, not only with AVG...but with Firefox as well, should raise the concern to you that perhaps it isn't the programs that are causing the problems. My recommendation to you is...before you go and label a program as you put it "in one word: s u x"...maybe you should explore the aspect that it's not the program that "s u x"...but perhaps the machine that's trying to run it.

At the start of every day I used to download the new virus database manually and work away confident that I was protected. Under the new system I would be required to restart instead of work ... so I revised my arrangement, downloading at the END of the working day so that update would occur on startup the next day. So I'm always 'playing catchup' running with a virus database that is at least one day behind the current threat.
During a slack period I thought that I'd respond to the 'Restart now?' prompt but find that it still continues to keep popping up so I'm not getting a reassuring 'thumbs up' to tell me that I'm 100% up to date.
I've been a loyal AVG user for years, recommended it to everyone and have benefited hugely from using it, but I'm growing increasingly frustrated that recent 'improvements' have made it significantly less user-friendly. I sent my comments to AVG and they made placatory noises. IF ANYONE AT AVG IS LISTENING I do wish that you would take note of these concern regarding your otherwise excellent product.

But then I switched to Avast! Home Edition 4.8, and I didn't get any problems since then.
