Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.1.394
"Great anti-virus and it's FREE!"
Pros: 1) Computer's with low RAM, like say, only 256 MB or below, should use AVG. It hardly slows down pc startup unlike Norton or other commercial anti-viruses.
2) For those who have heard that Avast! is better, well maybe but I find Avast!'s full system scans to be terribly slow. It took me more than an hour to complete a full scan with Avast! On the other hand, AVG only took about 25 minutes and it doesn't use too much RAM during these scans too so I can do something else like web browsing without being slowed down.
3) There's no technical support for this free edition but at least there's a forum. Better than Norton which doesn't even have a forum, right?
4) Has about all the features you'll need in an anti-virus.
5) Super fast updating. Updates are frequent too.
6) Efficient automatic updating (I have Norton on another PC and it's slow to automatically update- if there's any).
7) Here's a nice one, AVG has a feature called Rescue Disk Wizard. The Rescue Disk lets you scan and clean files on your pc while in MS-DOS mode (at the command prompt). It's useful if your system area has been infected.
8) Contrary to what I said in my last review, you can get a little IM protection, for MSN at least. Just copy this link without the brackets: ("C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgw.exe" /SE %1). Paste that into the part to scan for viruses and it will scan anything you receive through it. Thanks to mitcho1989 for telling me this.
9) It's free.
Cons: 1) Not much IM protection.
2) To be honest, I don't have any problems with AVG's interface but I guess other users might find AVG's Win98 style looks to be a turn off. Still, I wouldn't mind if they could update AVG's looks.
3) AVG doesn't have a firewall together with it like Norton or PC-Cillin but it's free, remember? And if you want Norton or PC-Cillin, you'll have to dig into your wallet. So, you choose yourself. Sides, there's quite a few free firewalls out there. In fact, there's lots of free software that provides features commercial software charge you for.

some very good information there, but im just asking about number 7 in your review, can you tell me how to get the Rescue Disk Wizard please? And i have the same problem with sikam, i got loads of warnings saying it was potentially dangerous and i tried to heal it but the access was denied :\

just a note, Grisoft does have a paid version with a firewall built in for less than $50 including a 2 year license with updates and full technical support. No the free version does not have this, but compared to the Norton and PC-Cillin paid versions mentioned, it is much more economical. I have used this version with firewall in a small business setting, and it works great!

I had McAfee 9.0 installed on my system, but due to the fact that it was due for renewal I chose to install AVG's free edition, and much to my surprise once installed, it found 16 Viruses that McAfee failed to find !!
Goes to show you that even a free antivirus program can deliver superior performance to that of a paid for program.

I also have Avg about a month, today was the 1st time that i really needed and i can say that i am a little disappointed. 1st of all i agree with your post sure Avg is a great antivirus and also thank u for the very good info u give us.2nd as i said above today i found a virus at my pc and the problem was that Avg couldnt "heal" it so the virus was still in my pc.Ofcourse i
followed the path that the virus was and when i opend the window
i saw avg's vault warned me about the virus so i deleted the file and everythink now its ok, but what can a user do wich dont have the experience to follow or even understand the virus path that avg gives? That is my only disapointment. Finally i can say that avg is a very good software but only for users who knows how to handle windows.

I test for a while this graet program, and I like it, so I went for the AVG PLUS, this one has the firewall, and UP to now has been working very, very good, I got the auto updates and access to their data base, just in case, so why not shell a few $$ and get a proven one to work for your computer?.
