"Resource hog to the max, but still effective"
Pros
Does have some quick scans and in depth protection.
Cons
Super super slowdown for most PC's especially those running with WinXP or legacy or anything at or under 4GB of physical memory.
Lots of false positives.
Slower to update virus definitions than othersSummary
Most of the people wanting free AV protection arent going to be running super machines. Having said that AVG's first offerings of free AV have been historically bloated, large in size, large to load, a super slowdown monkey on the back of the poor little user. While their 2012 offering was indeed noticeably faster, an improvement on horrible has only brought it up to lousy. Too many false positives pop up, the program still uses noticeably more resources than other free competitors, and worst yet for me - i saw some serious compatibility issues with my CAD productivity software. Namely SolidWorks. I have been installing AVAST on many peoples machines for the better part of 2 years now. The program is leaner, meaner, cleaner, quicker to update its definitions and much lower on false positives with a great detection rate. While AVG will certainly seek and destroy viruses as it is designed to, AVAST will do the job more effectively. AVG is like having a German Panzer VII tank guarding a small used car lot. Sure it will work in the end, but a Humvee with a gun turret will do just as nicely. Do yourself a favor and download Avast.
