Seems to protect your computer pretty decent for free.
Cons
I've had viruses on my PC before and AVG didnt find them during scan. Slows computer performance down heavily after almost every time your computer boots to check for updates. Annoying.
Summary
I've used AVG for years and it's pretty good, but not that great. Very basic in my opinion. I've switched to AVAST just because I'm sick of it slowing my computer down with updates.

A sure sign of malware is that you can't get rid of it easily. AVG is malware by that definition.
It absolutely wrecked my computers stability and speed, so I tried to remove it. The uninstaller hung, then crashed my OS. After restarting, the uninstaller refuses to uninstall the program, yet this malware is still running.
Tech support was useless - just another Indian call center reading from a script. After 20 minutes of being told to repeat the same thing over and over I gave up.
Bottom Line: install this piece of crapware on your computer and you will regret it. Run, do not walk away from AVG. -

Summary
It does slow my system down a little, but it's worth it not having to worry about getting a virus or worse. I'm very satisfied with it, and have no intention of using anything else.

1. Other reviewers say it works, which might be true, but what's the point of having "good" security software if it is just like the malware you are trying to eliminate!

Impossible to Uninstall Secure Search, which is a useless and annoying application that takes up space on my toolbar. A Google search shows that many people have this problem and go through all sorts of complex and advanced maneuvers to try to eliminate it, usually without success.
Summary
Just because it's free doesn't mean its worth it. Do you want to spend a lot of time and go through a lot of hassle just because the software was free? I though the purpose of security software was to avoid this problem, not cause it.

I have only had the AVG Virus protection for about two weeks and I have had nothing bad happen. I got AVG mainly based on its' reputation and so far I have nothing to complain about.
Cons
I do not see any downside to AVG.
