"eeww."
Version: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 98/ME 5.9.3
Cons
Spyware, unwanted programs, browser hijacking and exploits. There are a couple of other programs that will let me talk to my son and daughter-in-law without all the garbage.

"Great IM Porgram"
Version: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 98/ME 5.9.3
Pros
I'm not an AOL user (is anyone these days?) but although AIM is not the most feature-packed IM, it is light on resources, offers some customization, features buddy-linking, plenty of customizable away messages, and you can get free smilies, sounds, and icons: you don't have to pay for them - just download a free theme, and remove the icon (this is the part that forces the theme to your IM) and get some other free icon; e-mail alert feature; Norton offers IM protection; and hey, I just love that stock ticker :) In short, AIM is just a great and S I M P L E IM client.
Cons
It comes bundled with the regular array of AOL/AOD crapware; viruses can be easily spread from buddy to buddy; and I'm not that crazy about the DirectIM feature.

"Good, but with some flaws."
Version: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 98/ME 5.9.3
Pros
First off, most people have an AIM as a messenger account so its easy to find that one can contact one's friends or co-workers. Also, this program is very easy to use.
Cons
There are some security flaws.

"Eh..."
Version: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 98/ME 5.9.3
Pros
Very popular program. AIM is somewhat customizable. Can log into multiple screen names through linking. Also, the buddy pop-ups can be turned off. And I love the profiles feature and the ability to have away messages!
Cons
Annoying ads, many with sound if accendently mouse over! Profile doesn't allow enough characters (i.e. spaces, text, colors, etc). AIM often disconnects and pulls up the buddy window everytime it reconnects. It has a pop-up for mail which makes a loud sound. Cannot log into different screen names unless they are linked (it's possible, but AOL doesn't like me ;) ). Oh...and AIM Today. I have turned AIM Today off several times before it would quit popping up. I personally don't use it much. I wouldn't recommend it unless friends or family have it.

"Stay Away"
Version: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 98/ME 5.9.3
Pros
None over the other IM clients
Cons
Virus-prone
Horrible voice quality
Far behind other clients
If you want to use your AIM account, I recommend Trillian or Miranda IM for chatting. AIM is not good.

"WAS A 1st Choice, but AOL always messes ya somehow..."
Version: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 98/ME 5.9.3
Pros
Like a few others might have said - AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 5.9.3 has the basic layout with the least spyware (did still have some tackleable with an anti-spy program) - but thats before AOL figured away to make it force an update and auto-download the AIM Triton.
Cons
Like i said - AOL messes ya somehow. It will either force an update to AIM Triton or just download it and start Setup.
you can try using AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 5.9.3 - but if it asks you to update to AIM Triton, DONT . AIM Triton is THE max of spyware next to AOL Software.
Straight and simple - AOL is for people such as home-end users who know little or nothing about online risks who are oblivious to the fact that spyware and adware exists.

"Holy adverts, Batman!"
Version: AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 98/ME 5.9.3
Pros
Plenty of options and abilities (direct connect, file transfers, image/sound sharing, voice chat, etc.), and very easy to just download and use without much preliminary setup.
Cons
Ads. There are pop-ups, which can be turned off, but still some manage to kind their way onto my screen, and annoying little animated ads that are displayed on top of your buddy list and usually play sounds (movie trailers, etc). If you know how to use a resource hacking program then these ads won't be a problem of yours.
