    Summary

9.7 is a disaster. I have not been able to get an explanation from AOL about the constant freezing (not responding) or the inability to easily open AOL mail. They had no solution but when asked they gave me a link to reinstall 9.6. ---- True to form the link did not work !!!!!!

    Version: AOL Desktop 9.7

    Pros

    NONE WHAT SO EVER

    Cons

AOL desktop is the worst app ever...it will slow down your computer...I have one of the fastest machines out there but AOL really takes up all its resources and slows down my machine like anything...and the worst thing is that AOL keeps crashing and then restarts on its own...its a memory hog app....it will eventually kill your computer by taking up all its resources....STAY AWAY FROM AOL...ITS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE 10 YEARS AGO.....GOODBYE AOL

    "Unstable under Win 8.1"

    June 18, 2014  |   By richardschurman

    Version: AOL Desktop 9.7

    Pros

Familiar user interface. Have had an AOL account since ver 2 (25 yrs or so). This current interface has not undergone any significant changes in presentation so users will find it easy to navigate. Self-recovers from app failures (frequent). Can archive e-mail locally for preservation.

    Cons

I am running a Vaio Core i7 using Windows 8.1. I have been using this AOL 9.7 desktop for a few weeks now because it offers an email preservation exported to a local file BUT I have also had constant problems with slow response (I suspect due to all the ad crap they shove at you now) AND more importantly - the app will lock up frequently and restart itself with an AOL popup. The "Details" are not too revealing. It is unstable BUT is self-recovering.

    Summary

Really do not see much in AOL 9.7 to get excited about and the instability under Win 8 has forced me to use a brwoser and go direct to AOL Mail rather than use the desktop for anything but saving a local archive. Pretty pathetic with all the hoopla they tout on rollout. If they focused on the user like the days under Steve Case then they could regain their stature of old. AOL is just another mediocre provider these days. Sad and pathetic
