Version: ALS100 Windows Sound Driver x
"software needs careful handling"
Summary: ALS100 sound card re-visited. Like many people I have a couple of ALS100+ sound cards in the junk box. They never worked for very long before playing silly b*gg*rs in the machine. The problem was obviously the software supplied, but a true solution was never found. Recently I needed a sound card for an old ISA machine running win95b, and ALS100+ was the only one available. So in it went and troubles started again exactly as before. However I noticed that it worked perfectly just once. Then it went pear shaped after re-booting. No amount of re-installing of drivers would work. So I removed all references to ALS100 in the registry using regedit, and also in autoexec, and looked anywhere else (win.ini system.ini) for it. A clean start. Detected by Win95 OK. Drivers OK from the CD folder S270 ... Checked control panel/system. All drivers fine. Went to autoexec and removed the A3init call. Went into regedit and removed the one reference to A3init using 'find'. Re-boot. A few checks from Win95b on the way. Re-boot. All clean and running. A3init turns out to be a setup program for the card. Called every time by Win95, it seemed to be the culprit at fouling things up later. Fingers crossed, machine keeps on booting OK with sound. Nope, its trying to start over on re-detection of card as unknown device. Cancel this. Let the startup complete. Shut down and Power down (important). Re-start. Now seems OK again. End of story. Not quite. Any later changes elsewhere in control panel can upset the applecart. Go back to square one and remove all traces of ALS100 from the registry ....
