"Probably the best backup software for Windows 7."

    January 14, 2011  |   By Lloyd Codrington

    Version: AJC Active Backup 1.6

    Pros

As a file is edited and saved the software springs to life, not that you'll notice, and perform a backup. And if you need to recover a previous edit then simply navigate the backup drive or folder and select you backup then the revision you want.

    Cons

I can't personally think of one.

    Summary

I was thinking of overhauling my machine and going for a RAID setup which would have cost money buying new drives and then also increased the temp inside my case which is already water-cooled, so was not happy with that option. So I searched around and found this and it was simply a matter of setting it up which took 10-15 minutes to get it as I wanted it, there are a raft of options to configure this just as you want but easy to understand, and then it just works away in the background.

A 2,220k footprint at idle and then after moving a folder to an area monitored it raised to 6,000k while performing the backup. That was 4020 files in 331 folders and measuring in at 34.5MB. So resources are not eaten up as I thought would be the case.

The figures above are for the backup service, but note that the restoring of any backup is done using another piece of software, which is installed as part of the main installation process, and this controls your access to the revisions of your files.

Revisions means you can save all copies of the edits you make to a file for the day, week, month etc. so effectively you could have hundreds of edits for one file, it up to you to set how many to keep. You also set when you want aged revisions deleted and you can mark milestone in a document or file's backup by leaving a note and then configuring the backup software not to delete revisions with notes attached, thus deleting all according to when set but leaving revisions with notes, the milestones. Great feature.

And so here is the real bottom line, it cost £500.oops sorry no it's $29 per user. Yep the peace of mind for such a small investment is amazing and something I am certain you will not find in any other backup software.

I have found nothing like this for this price on the net, but what makes this such a magnificent piece of software is that the resources used are so low. No big investment needed in memory or increasing CPU speed.

Buy an external backup drive and you are all set. You can't go wrong with this.
