I hate spyware! It won't go away. Ad-aware hasn't been able to keep a lot of it off my computer. Why?

Hey all. i've been using it for almost3 months now and the spyware keeps coming back. Had to purchase another program to completely get rid of it all. Not too happy about that.

      "Thank you Lavasoft"

      January 17, 2005   |   By Lil GTO

      Version: Ad-Aware SE 1.05

      Summary

Geeze there are an awful lot of web sites that claim to offer free spyware removal software but what they really mean is free spryware detection software - cannot remove it unless you pay $. I don't necessarily object out right to paying for this service - but what happened to truth in advertising? I have a new laptop provide by my work and was trying to tweak some things like having the caps lock key not be a caps lock key (the behavior of which is really frustrating for a mac user) and I downloaded an installer for a small app that happened to be infected - in a matter of seconds - despite enterprise MacAfee running I was infected with about 42 malware, spyware, adware items which MacAfee detected and blocked to some extenct but not completely and did not remove them. Here I am about 4 hours later nearly recovered from the problem and a little bit concerned that there might still be something on my system that should not be or that some of my personal info has been stolen. A recent security update on the Mac OS presents a dialog whenever an application runs on yoru system for the first time asking your permission to let it run - this may not be perfect - especially if you are not in the habit of reading all your dialogs but at least gives you a chance to say I didn't ask a program to run - what's going on.

Don't get sucked into Payware WebRoot Spysweeper, it doens't do any more than Free Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy can do!

This app is great. The freeware version is not crippled. Reference file updates appear frequently to combat new spyware. I sound like a commercial because I am a satisfied user.

"Used it for years - Great App"

      September 02, 2004   |   By rwizard

      Version: Ad-Aware SE 1.03

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I do not understand the comment trashing this app. I have used it for years(started using it on Windows 95), with nothing but excellent results. I use both the free and pay versions, and have it running on over thirty systems. I've had no need for tech support, but the one time I emailed with a question about other platform support, they were responsive. Lavasoft was a pioneer in anti-spyware, and they have remained dedicated to the concept of eliminating the problem in ways that will make software such as ad-aware obsolete. How many of the other vendors can say that?

      "Sort-of works, but beware..."

      June 27, 2004   |   By sgodun

      Version: Ad-aware 6.181

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
GOOD: It removes an awful lot of spyware and such. I recently ran it on an older P3 system where it found and removed over 1300 bits of spyware, malware, and other such baddies.

BAD: Customer support is HORRIBLE. Don't expect anything useful in the way of helpful suggestions or useful information, especially not in a timely manner. What's worse, the "Plus" and "Pro" versions of this app (paid-for versions which also include a background checker) CAN ACTUALLY REINSTALL SPYWARE THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN DELETED. Yes, you read that right! If this were an anti-virus app, it would be like the anti-virus app reinstalling a malevolent virus after it was removed. BAD! BAD! BAD! (And yes, in their very own support forums Lavasoft even admits that this can happen.)

It's a decent enough app in its freeware form but don't rely on it to maintain a healthy system (use it in conjunction with other spyware apps) and don't rely on Lavasoft to help you with your problems in a timely manner. As of this writing I've been waiting almost two weeks for help with a seemingly simple question, and all Lavasoft does is keep asking me for information that I've given them two weeks ago.
