"FINALLY fixed google redirect virus/worm!"
After more than 50 man-hours and 3 years and every combination of fixes, combofix (along with a few other programs in VERY QUICK SUCCESSION) got rid of the google redicrect/surfwebway worm, in less than a half-hour with combofix -- and this worm -does- react quickly to attempts to kill it. I was finally ready to pay for a fix somewhere, not really believing anyone or anything could honestly fix it. But, this did it. I'm exceedingly happy. Free fix, after many hours and several years of a BIG problem.
It's true: if you screw this up, you quite possibly could be hosed. I'm looking at the negative reviews, and YES: you've got to follow the directions exactly. There's not a lot of support. This program is NOT for beginners, and is not for the faint of heart. If you're not comfortable with reading log files and with some ambiguity, this isn't for you. Stick with what you know.
So, for -me- it's a 5-star product. For others, who 1-don't follow directions EXACTLY, yes: I bet you could really screw things up, and 2-aren't experienced users, it's not a program for them -- it's a little low on support info. See user pattylynne's review: it's a good one for 'what worked'. I also can't see a reason for using once a week, and in fact would be a bit nervous to do so. I -do- use a combination of antivirus and antispy/malware products: I find no one thing catches every thing, and I think combofix should be an "emergency measure," as opposed to a "often used" program. I had no problems with downloads or installation. (I haven't uninstalled yet.)
