"It's the best of the best."

    January 4, 2012  |   By Spartanicus

I've used many, many text editors over the past twenty years - both on Windows and on Unix/Linux platforms. Even when I've worked in other editors for a while I always return to jEdit. It is the most flexible and useful editor there is on Windows. I also use Eclipse extensively, mostly for working on team projects in SVN, but for my day-to-day editing, be it Java, PHP, (X)HTML, CSS, or JavaScript, jEdit is absolutely my tool of choice - and has managed to remain that way for nearly ten years.

There are few. Because it is Java based, it won't launch as quickly as some OS-specific browsers, particularly if jEdit gets loaded up with every imaginable plug-in. To really make the tool shine to its fullest, some plug-ins are really useful. With just a little investment of time in looking at the plug ins (there are many!) - you can quickly break down the tool to just the few you need ... at which point, load time is as quick as (or quicker than) other snappy editors.

jEdit is powerful and feature-rich. Because of this, it can take a little bit of time to get the most out of it. But that small investment of time is absolutely worth it. I cannot recommend this editor more highly.
