    "Nagware popups, manual updates disabled"

    January 11, 2011  |   By guyhalpe

Multiple video calls and Facebook feed - if you're into that sort of thing.

Manual updates disabled. Nagware popups. Bad interface design with thumbnails. Text on video call window indecipherable (video rendering issues)?

Absolutely appalling - terrible. This new version has sneakily removed the option to manually update. So Skype can load anything it likes in the background, unknown to you, under the guise of 'software updates'. What does it load? Huge banner nagware advertisements that you have to click to make go away as soon as Skype starts up - you can't do anything until you click! Switching off notifications in the Options panel has absolutely no effect! I even tried clicking an ad - it applies only to US and Canada. What about the rest of the planet?? I lost no time in uninstalling it and reverting to the last version that allowed manual updates. I will never update Skype again, and will switch to another messaging client as soon as possible. I had such respect for Skype for what it allowed, and was even considering getting the paid service until this happened - no longer! They've just lost another customer and any hope of customer referrals.
