    "Very Temperamental! But ...Hey It's Free :)"

    Pros

    After it failed to detect a rootkit imitating Malwarebytes I switched to AVG until v2013 came out. Since that got hinky I switched back to AVAST. It's not perfect but I think it's the best free product we have. Works great with XP Pro but not so good with Windows 8. But thanks to trusty CNET I was able to search and find great work-arounds.

    Cons

    The v7.0 scans started to come back with unable to read error messages on XP Pro machine. When I called support they told me my reliable ole Thinkpad was about to crash so if I purchased remote support they could fix the error ...hmmm it didn't pass the smell test - so I declined. Then when I loaded it on new Thinkpad Win 8, my pc kept telling me I didn't have an antivirus or firewall protection (probably because Lenovo pre-loaded awful McAfee). Once again I found the fix on CNET :)

    Summary

    Great free software, you'll just have to have patience in finding work-arounds for its quirky quirks!
