"Used to be a big fan"

    October 20, 2012  |   By jscott418

    Pros

    Minimal resource hog

    Cons

Allows some malware past real time scan and full scans are pretty slow

    Summary

I used to be a bigger fan of MSE until this last update. Its nowhere near being bloated but its also a bit too lax in its active security real time protection. I had a piece of malware that had taken over my IE 9 browser and was redirecting searches made in URL bar to other sites. I also noticed in Task manager that I had two processes of IE running even though I did not have IE open. When I forced quit those processes they returned after a minute or so. MSE scans even full scan provided nothing. I ended up using a scanner called ComboFix.exe to eventually fix the issues. This is the second or third time a PC running MSE has missed some malware. I have basically gone from being a total supporter of MSE to being skeptical that it can properly protect a PC.
