    "No Longer Usable or Trustworthy"

    July 6, 2012  |   By Ken_Saunders

I was able to finally uninstall it after booting in safe mode

I had been using avast for 7 or so years, I had installed it on many machines for friends and family and got many people to use it.
The latest update has been a nightmare.
First, the complete setup/nag screen would come up every time after a reboot regardless of what I did (hit finish, close the window, etc).
I guess that the only way to kill it is to install Chrome but I didn't find out because I do not want Chrome and specified that in the hard to locate option in Settings > Troubleshooting as well as unchecking the option in the nag screen.
Worst of all, the latest automatic update made my computer unusable. This was the 2nd time this happened after an update.
I had to run safe mode and uninstall it.

The sad thing is that I cannot find a better replacement. Well, except for one that doesn't render my PC useless.
Visit the avast forums or search the Internet and you'll see that I'm not alone. It's as if this is alpha software that was never thoroughly tested.
    Use at your own risk.

I had uninstalled avast and tried another product. I was very unhappy with it. I missed avast and had no desire to use anything else. I went to the forums and searched through threads and read the issues from other users. I decided to write a post of my own and got a quick response with suggestions on how to eliminate and avoid further issues.

I tried the suggestions and they worked perfectly on both Vista and Windows 7.
I'm glad that I have given avast another shot and suggest to others having issues that they try the forums.
Here is the thread with the solutions that worked for me.

The sad thing is that I cannot find a better replacement.

Feature-wise there isn't, not free. I, myself, am a long time avast user, but after the debacle of the release of version 7.0.1407 back on February, followed by the disaster with .1451, I abandoned avast and acquainted myself with AVG. What good is ab av loaded with all the features when it paralyzes your PC?
