"New interface, same old defective product"

    October 16, 2011  |   By jaytee28

The interface looks nicer (not that difficult).

Same machine hog, same constant update nags, same false positives

Avira knew they were being left behind. Yet all they came up with was a slightly less dated interface. Underneath, everything is as woeful as before.

The latest update puts it back in pole position as it coincides with Avast losing the plot (as all latest comparative tests show). Right now the very best free AV.

The REALLY sad thing is that Avira's paid version is currently gaining fantastic reviews from the likes of AV-Comparatives and AV-Test yet the people in Germany feel unable to offer any such benefits for the free version. Yes it is a basic AV product, but making web browsing security conditional on installing the ASK toolbar is utterly obnoxious. I'd rather stay with free AV providers that provide protection without compromise
