"Fat and Obtrusive"
Appeared to protect computer from viruses.
More interested in telling you it was working than in working
Slowed PC unacceptably
Nearly impossible to uninstall - tentacles EVERYWHERE
These comments refer to every version through 2008, my last Norton AntiVirus. I had used for years and WILL NOT allow it on my machines again. The software came pre-installed on my new HP and the first thing I did was uninstall it... which is non-trivial because Symantec has arranged for bits and pieces to remain everywhere so that it shows up and uses resources even when there is no functional bit of the software left. I have found Norton AntiVirus to be obtrusive, more interested in telling you it is working at EVERY opportunity than in just getting its job done in the background. As a result, it was often necessary to de-activate the software and get offline so as to avoid risk of contamination simply because the software was such an impediment to getting work done. I have had friends who work for Symantec and it was clear that they focused far more on marketing than engineering... a real pity because I had been their customer from about Day 1. No More. Go AVG and get a better, leaner product for free!
