Dark Mysteries - The Soul Keeper
Full user review
"Free demo. $5 for the full version. Excellent fun."
Terrific kid friendly game based on an H.P. Lovecraft novel. Excellent graphics. Excellent music. Fun plot. Three levels of play difficulty. Addictive, bring munchies. Fun bonus extras at the end, including a happy ending chapter. Bring more munchies.
Some people aren't pleased with it being 'free' at the Mac App Store because the initial documentation could be clearer about the fact that what's free is access to only the first chapter of this several chapter game. You then have to pay $5 to unlock the rest of it. I found $5 to be a great price!
Some people find the find-and-click sections of the game to be repetitive of difficult. I found I got better at them as I got used to them. It is very much like a kid's game of find the hidden object. Some of the finding can be diabolical, inspiring click-on-everything mode. You have to be a bit crafty to figure out exactly what they want you to find at times, with occasional exasperation.
A beautifully done game that is part of a series of H.P. Lovecraft inspired stories whereby you are participating in the events. The graphics are wonderful. The music is terrific. The game play help system is incredible. I've never seen a game play help system that was better. The help itself is a remarkable achievement. You only have to use as much help as you like. It is very subtle but very effective. There are no dead ends. If you get extra lost, there is a walkthrough right in the interface.
Higher difficulty levels allow less help and less amenability to your errors. So start out in easy mode, enjoy, then return to play again at the next level of difficulty.
$5 to play through this wonderful game is a great price.
I didn't want to stop playing. It took me the equivalent of an afternoon to finish it. Some find that short. And yet there is enough complexity to make your replay interesting. NONE of the click-and-find sections of the game repeat themselves upon replay. They're nicely randomized except for the key element you're digging around to find.
Try out the initial free access to decide if you like it. If you do, you'll find the rest of the game just as excellent.
Be sure to check out their other H.P. Lovecraft game based on 'The Mountains of Madness'. I enjoyed that one as well, one of the greatest alien monster stories of all time. I'm hoping the development team continue with the series! They're a great team with great, quality work to enjoy. I don't shill for anyone. Their games are great fun.
