"A Linux version for the mainstream Windows user"
Easy to setup. Very simple, very fast software. Has everything you'd ever need to surf the internet, check e-mail, and even put together some spreadsheets or documents. It's FREE.
Setup requires a wee bit of computer knowledge... like knowing what a partition is.
The learning curve on Ubuntu is really gentle. It's very Windows-like in it's behaviour and layout and very non-Windows like in it's logic. As an example, I wanted to play a video file from my video library, Ubuntu recognized that I didn't have the necessary codecs, went out and found them and asked if I wanted to install them. Wow! Why can't a multi billion dollar corporation do that? The applications written for Ubuntu are top notch; I don't get the feeling that I'm using a slapped-together piece of code that the coders glued together during their free-time. The whole package clearly shows a lot of effort, detail, pride, and hard work by the coders. I can easily see myself ditching Windows completely someday and converting entirely to Ubuntu.
