"If Fences doesn't UNinstall well, for you, READ THIS."
Pros
Cute tool for organizing your desktop. But I prefer to do the job myself. So, after several month - maybe more than a year - I decided to uninstall Fences. That's when the trouble really started.
Cons
If you installed Fences back when, you may have version 0.95, like I did. Fences version 0.95 (and perhaps others) do not uninstall cleanly. You may see C:\Documents and Settings\Don\desktop, but your screen is blank. Try Cleanse v4.5 or newer.
Summary
It appears that some of the 3rd party software removal tools can provide a clean removal of Fences. I used Cleanse v4.5 to remove Fences v0.95 cleanly, after the standard Windows XP removal tool had failed, and I had restored my system to before my first removal attempt. It worked beatuifully, and there are probably other uninstallers that can do the same job.
IMHO, CNET should have a warning similar to this comment, but much easier to find, posted on the site and perhaps emailed to all who downloaded this headache. An apology would be thoughtful, too. But the absolute minimum response for a host that has recommended something so problemmatic would be to recommend a solution for those of us who come back to the source in search of that solution. There are now several other places where people have looked for help, and received, at least, some sympathy.
